Karangarua: Gateway to the Copland Track
Accommodation in Karangarua
The Copland Track shapes travel planning for Karangarua: river and mountain views, impressive forest, and natural hot springs are among the special experiences along the route. The track in Westland Tai Poutini National Park is part of the Te Wahipounamu South West NZ World Heritage Area. Those interested in this landscape will also find a range of timeframes and route conditions to consider when planning.
Copland Track: trailhead, routes, and time required
The Copland Track starts at a car park beside Rough Creek. From State Highway 6, reach it by crossing the bridge over the Karangarua River. The turnoff to the car park is on the north side of the bridge; a gravel road of about 150 metres then leads to it. Check the signage and access conditions before setting out.
The route from the Karangarua River bridge to Cassel Flat Hut is estimated to take six hours. How long you actually take depends on conditions and your group’s fitness. The walk from State Highway 6 to Christmas Flat in the Karangarua Tahr Hunting Area takes a different amount of time: two days, with track conditions affecting the actual walking time. Helicopter access to Christmas Flat in the same area is available year-round; confirm flight availability in advance.
The route through the Karangarua River valley to Christmas Flat is marked with orange plastic markers, and windfall is cleared annually. However, in heavy or prolonged rain, unbridged streams may flood and become unsafe. Check the weather and current DOC advice before setting out. Routes into the Douglas River Valley are mostly unmarked, making them quite different from the marked route to Christmas Flat.
The routes through the Karangarua and Douglas valleys offer hunters, hikers, and mountaineers challenging opportunities in the rugged wilderness of Westland Tai Poutini National Park. A DOC hunting permit is required to hunt in the Karangarua Tahr Hunting Area. Chamois and deer are also listed as game species there. Check permit requirements and current rules before hunting.
The Welcome Flat Hot Pools are nearby. It’s only a short walk from the hut to the natural hot springs; on clear days, they offer views of the Sierra Range. Check conditions and access before travelling.
Choosing the right focus for your accommodation
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. If the Copland Track routes are your main interest, base your choice of location around Karangarua and the track access described here. This keeps the routes and their specific time requirements distinct from other experiences in the region.
More nature experiences in the Westland District
In the wider Westland District destination, the area around the settlement of Fox Glacier provides access to a dynamic glacier landscape in a forested setting, reachable from the State Highway by car and on foot. Fox Glacier Valley offers hiking and cycling options with varied views of the glacier valley. At Lake Matheson, an easy circuit track follows the water’s edge. Only on calm, clear days are Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman reflected in the lake.
The tracks around Franz Josef Glacier also offer different experiences: the Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere Walk is a short rainforest walk with views of the glacier valley. The Roberts Point Track, by contrast, is a challenging day hike with views of the glacier and surrounding mountains. This comparison highlights the difference between a short walk and a demanding day route, without conflating these regional destinations with Karangarua.
Another natural area in the Westland District is the Ōkārito River Mouth Lagoon, the largest unmodified wetland on the West Coast, with diverse birdlife. Night tours are also offered in Ōkārito, where visitors can observe brown kiwi in their natural habitat; more than 200 brown kiwi live there. Check whether a tour is available before travelling. In the wider destination, glacier views, forest tracks, and birdwatching are distinct interests alongside the challenging routes around Karangarua.
