Runanga brings together the history of mining and the labour movement with trails to waterfalls and through forest. The former Runanga Miners’ Hall gives the town a clear historical focus; the Coal Creek Falls Track highlights rainforest and a waterfall. Another trail, the Coal Creek Track, leads through mixed beech and podocarp forest into the Coal Creek valley. This offers different interests for planning your trip: history, a loop to the waterfalls, or a descent into the valley.

Miners’ Hall and History

The former Runanga Miners’ Hall is classified as a Category 1 Historic Place. It is one of only two known miners’ halls preserved at their original location, and the only hall directly associated with the founding of the Labour Party. Its significance encompasses the history of the working class, the organised labour movement, and the Labour Party in New Zealand. The large miners’ hall built in 1908 in Rūnanga was the setting for numerous meetings during the strike. Together, these historical connections offer insight into the social and political role that miners’ halls play in the history of the town. If you want your trip to take in not only the landscape but also the history of working life, Runanga’s hall history is a distinctive focus.

Rainforest and Coal Creek Falls

The Coal Creek Falls Track leads through lush rainforest to Coal Creek Falls. The trail is an easy 3.6-kilometre loop, with a stated walking time of 60 minutes. This makes it easy to factor the walking time into your day and allow extra time to spend at the falls. Benches offer views of the waterfall, and steps lead down to the pool at its base. The pool is suitable for swimming during the hot summer months. Swimming is therefore a seasonal option; the waterfall and its views give the loop its own appeal even without plans to swim.

Two Trails, Different Highlights

The names of the two trails are similar, but their described routes differ. The Coal Creek Track descends through mixed forest of beech and podocarp trees into the Coal Creek valley. Its car park is at the end of Ballance Street and can be reached via Seddon Street. The Coal Creek Falls Track, by contrast, leads through rainforest to the waterfalls. It once led to the West Coast’s first commercial coal mine, connecting today’s waterfall walk with the area’s former coal mining. When choosing between them, you can consider these different highlights: a valley descent and mixed forest on the Coal Creek Track, or rainforest and a waterfall loop on the Coal Creek Falls Track.

The historical perspective may also influence your choice of a holiday home in Runanga: the hall’s history offers a cultural focus, while the two trails provide different nature experiences. The loop to the falls is described as taking 60 minutes to walk; the other trail descends into the valley. This can help you decide which theme will shape your stay most, without combining the two routes into a single trail.

More Experiences in the Grey District

The wider Grey District offers further options with a different character. You can take a walk along the Greymouth Flood Wall on Mawhera Quay, where you’ll see the river and commercial area, the fishing port, and the tidal estuary. The sealed Point Elizabeth Walkway is a coastal and bush trail leading to a lookout platform on a cliff, and is described as suitable for families and children. Check weather and track conditions before setting out. The Scenic Trail runs along the northwestern shore of Lake Brunner and is open to walkers and cyclists; here too, check local conditions before starting. If you’d like to experience the lake from the water, you can set out on Lake Brunner from the boat ramp at Moana in a motorboat, yacht, or excursion charter. In the Grey District, urban waterfront, coastline, and lakeshore offer distinct regional experiences alongside Runanga’s mining history and forest trails.
