Te Kauwhata on Lake Waikare
Accommodation in Te Kauwhata
Te Kauwhata lies on the edge of Lake Waikare. The waterside setting, a local golf course and an events programme with regular dates give your trip several possible focuses. Some events also offer specific reasons for families to visit, while the lake and nearby wetlands provide a distinctive landscape to explore.
Lake Waikare and the Whangamarino Wetlands
Lake Waikare is the second-largest shallow lake on New Zealand’s North Island. The Whangamarino Wetlands lie immediately north of Te Kauwhata and form the North Island’s second-largest peat bog and swamp complex. They have been a Ramsar site since 1989. Lake Waikare feeds the wetlands, making the lake and wetlands two distinct but connected landscape features to explore during a stay in the area.
If you are choosing the region for its natural scenery, these two names can help you find your bearings: Te Kauwhata lies on the edge of Lake Waikare, while the Whangamarino Wetlands are immediately north of the town. Their size gives both landscapes a distinctive scale without making them a single area.
Local dates and events
The Te Kauwhata Locals Market is held on the last Saturday of each month from 12 pm to 4 pm at St Andrews Church Hall on Scott Road. For Children’s Day, Splash’n Dash is a free family event at the Domain, held on the first Sunday in March from 10 am to 2 pm. If your visit depends on an event like this, check the current event dates before you travel.
Two different free family events are held at the Village Green. SKATEfest takes place at the skatepark and is for skateboarders and scooter riders of all ages, as well as their whānau. Unity Hoops uses the half court for street basketball and combines art, music and basketball games for all ages and abilities. Dates for both events may change.
The annual Te Kauwhata community photography competition is open to photographers of all ages and experience levels, including children, young people and adults. On 25 April, Te Kauwhata Community Events holds a dawn memorial service and a civic ceremony at the Te Kauwhata War Memorial. The Te Kauwhata A&P Show takes place every year on the second Saturday in December. The Christmas Parade travels along the main street on a Friday evening; arrangements may change.
Golf and travel planning
The Waikare Golf Club in town has an 18-hole course. If golf is part of your travel plans, check the latest course details before visiting. For bus travel, BUSIT! operates a route from Hamilton to Pukekohe via Te Kauwhata and Meremere. The route may be a factor in choosing how to get there; check the current timetable before travelling.
Events offer possible dates for your trip, while the lakeside setting on Lake Waikare and the nearby wetlands provide a landscape to explore. When looking for a holiday home, you could first decide which of these aspects is most important for your trip. If a particular event is the reason for your visit, plan around its confirmed date; for a landscape-focused stay, the lake and wetlands take centre stage.
More options in the Waikato District
The wider Waikato District also offers opportunities for walking and cycling. The Te Awa River Ride is a 65-kilometre concrete path along the Waikato River, running from Ngāruawāhia to Lake Karapiro. The Hakarimata Rail Trail follows the former railway line between Ngāruawāhia and Glen Massey to a series of stream cascades and is described as a family-friendly route for walking and cycling.
Another example in the Waikato District is the Piipiiwharauroa Trail, which crosses the grounds of the Te Uku Wind Farm. The trail is 18 kilometres long; the return journey takes about four hours on foot or about two hours by bicycle. Access and wind farm operations may vary, so it is advisable to check local conditions before setting out. These regional trails add to the options in the Waikato District, but are separate attractions rather than features of Te Kauwhata itself.
