Taupiri – Mountain, History and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Taupiri
Mount Taupiri, also known as Taupiri Maunga and “Taupiri-Kuao” (“the embracing mountain”), is sacred to Waikato-Tainui and its tribal identity. It is also the final resting place of the Māori royal family. This special cultural significance shapes what Taupiri means to visitors: the mountain is not only a destination for outdoor activities, but also a place that plays an important role for Waikato-Tainui. Families can therefore combine their visit with conversations about the mountain’s significance and get to know Taupiri from more than one perspective.
Mount Taupiri Loop Walk and Summit
The loop walk on Mount Taupiri is about 2.6 km long and has an elevation gain of about 270 m. The southernmost section follows a steep 900 m climb to the summit.
Another track leads from an access road off Watts Grove on Orini Road to the summit of Mount Taupiri. This provides a specific starting point for this summit track, in addition to the information about the loop walk. The two route descriptions offer different guidance: one gives the length and elevation gain of the loop walk, while the other describes the route from the access road to the summit. Plan your outing based on which of the described walking options you want to focus on.
Cultural and Historical Landmarks
The mountain’s history is also part of Taupiri’s character. Chief Te Putu established Taupiri paa in the 17th century on the summit of a spur of Mount Taupiri.
Taupiri is also home to Christ Church, a Gothic Revival church built in 1904. The building is another cultural landmark alongside Mount Taupiri and Taupiri paa. If you are interested in local history, you can distinguish these different names and periods as you learn about Taupiri: Christ Church is a church built in 1904, while Taupiri paa dates back to the 17th century.
Another Kind of Outing
Taupiri Recreation Reserve has a skatepark and a slide. These two specific amenities offer a different focus from the tracks on Mount Taupiri: they complement outdoor activities with recreational options at the reserve.
Location and Travel Planning
Taupiri is located on the Waikato Expressway. The Te Iringa Lagoon trail also runs near Taupiri, alongside the Huntly section of the Waikato Expressway. There is a specific access restriction for this trail: access is only available from the southbound carriageway. Bear this in mind if you include Te Iringa Lagoon in your outing plans; this restriction applies to access to the trail and is distinct from Taupiri’s general location on the expressway.
You can include a holiday rental in Taupiri in your travel plans.
