Murchison combines a long gold-mining history with forest landscapes and whitewater activities. If you’re looking for a holiday destination where active adventures sit alongside experiences of nature and local history, you’ll find plenty to discover here. Which of these shapes your stay can also guide your choice of a holiday apartment or house in Murchison.

Whitewater and activity

Murchison is considered a paradise for whitewater activities thanks to its many rivers. The New Zealand Kayak School in Murchison offers stationary whitewater kayaking courses for paddlers of all skill levels. This gives you a practical way to centre your stay around kayaking, whether you have plenty of paddling experience or are at a different skill level.

Murchison Recreation Reserve is also a great option for active holiday days: it includes the town’s main recreational facilities. These include the Four Rivers Flow Zone, an all-weather pump track for all abilities. Murchison Sport, Recreation and Cultural Centre is also a multi-purpose event venue. If you’re bringing together different interests on one trip, you can look beyond water activities to the town’s other recreational and event offerings.

Forest trails and views

On the edge of town, the Murchison Skyline Walkway winds through mixed forest of beech and podocarp trees. Along the trail, these trees give way to areas of native ferns, bracken and broom. The walkway also offers views north towards Kahurangi National Park. The trail brings together forest scenery and views towards the national park, without requiring a set itinerary.

Another natural highlight is Kahikatea Reserve. It preserves a remnant of the lowland podocarp forest that once covered the plains around Murchison. Kahikatea and mataī trees, along with lush fern undergrowth, characterise this forest. If you’re interested in the area’s original vegetation, you’ll find a different kind of forest here from the mixed woodland of the Skyline Walkway.

Local history and excursions

Murchison is a historic gold-mining town. Many buildings in the town centre have been preserved in their original form from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, giving the town’s history a tangible architectural dimension. Murchison Museum provides information about local tourist activities, attractions and interesting places in the surrounding area.

There are also different options to consider when planning excursions beyond the town. Johnson Creek Track starts 7 km west of Murchison, 6 km along the unsealed Matakitaki West Bank Road. Murchison Golf Course is a 9-hole course 2 km north of Murchison on Kawatiri Murchison Highway. If you’re interested in the Old Ghost Road, Murchison is the closest starting point to the Lyell end. Buller Gorge Swing Bridge, Heritage and Adventure Park offers a fast, 160 m-long Comet Line zipline ride.

Several companies offer bus services to Murchison from Nelson, Blenheim, the West Coast and Christchurch. When choosing the focus of your holiday, you can therefore weigh up whether whitewater, forests and nature, local history or other activities should take centre stage.
