Accommodation in Waitara
Historic railway and river define Waitara
In Waitara, railway history, a trail along the Waitara River, and activities on the water come together. The town can therefore be explored through a range of interests: a ride on the historic railway offers a distinctive experience, while the Heritage Trail focuses on the river and its surroundings. Kayaking and white-water rafting add two more ways to experience the Waitara River.
Taranaki’s Heritage Railway runs a historic train from Queen Street in Waitara along the preserved, 150-year-old Waitara Branch Line to Lepperton Junction and back. The route takes passengers out of Waitara and back to their starting point. The journey takes 70 to 80 minutes.
Public train rides are offered on the first and third Sunday of each month. The railway combines a specific experience with the history of a preserved branch line: both the historic train and the Waitara Branch Line are part of the journey.
By the Waitara River: trail, panels, and water sports
The Waitara Heritage Trail runs along the Waitara River from West Quay in the town centre to Marine Park near the river mouth. The route therefore leads from central Waitara towards the park by the river. Ten carved panels stand along the trail’s boardwalk. They depict Waitara’s flora and fauna, giving the route a distinctive artistic and nature-focused touch.
The history of defence is also among Waitara’s themes. The Waitara Pill Box was used by the Home Guard, which had been formed during the Second World War. Its role in this section was to defend the coastal area between Waipapa Stream and Waiongana River. This context makes clear which specific stretch of coast its wartime use related to, without making any statement about present-day access to the historic site. Waitara is thus home to two distinct historical themes: transport on the branch line and the defence of a stretch of coast.
The Waitara River flows through the town and is popular for kayaking and white-water rafting.
