Gardens, art and local history

Established in 1876, the Oamaru Public Gardens are among New Zealand’s oldest gardens and hold the five-star “Garden of Significance” rating. Established in 1988 as a symbol of friendship between Oamaru and the large Chinese community in the Waitaki District, most members of this community are descendants of gold miners from Central Otago. Oamaru is the destination of the eighth stage of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. This section covers 54 km from Duntroon to Ōamaru, passing rock formations, valleys and former railway lines. The trail as a whole runs from the Southern Alps near Mt Cook Village through the South Island landscape to the historic coastal town of Ōamaru.
