Dunedin: maritime history, gardens and art
Accommodation in Dunedin
Dunedin offers very different insights into history, art and nature: at Tūhura Otago Museum, the exhibits span the city’s maritime past and regional nature, as well as interactive experiments; gardens, a gallery and the railway station each have their own appeal. Consider whether you would rather include exhibitions, garden settings, city history or a market visit in your trip. This gives your search for a holiday rental in Dunedin a concrete connection to the kind of stay you want.
Maritime history, science and art
The Maritime Gallery at Tūhura Otago Museum explores Dunedin’s maritime history and the development of the Union Steam Ship Company. A particularly impressive exhibit is the 18-metre-long skeleton of a fin whale. The museum’s seven permanent galleries also tell stories about material culture, natural history and local life. This brings together different ways of exploring: you can focus on maritime history or turn your attention to nature and everyday life in the region.
At Tūhura Science Centre, more than 40 interactive stations invite visitors to explore. They include a three-storey slide, a tornado display, light experiments and a tropical indoor forest. If you enjoy trying things out and observing, you’ll find a different approach here than in a traditional gallery. The offerings range from movement and nature experiences to phenomena of light, with each station focusing on different things.
Founded in 1884, Dunedin Public Art Gallery was New Zealand’s first art gallery. It houses New Zealand artworks dating from 1860 to the present day. For art lovers, a visit combines a long gallery history with works from different eras. Dunedin Railway Station is also an important tourist attraction and heritage site. Historic train rides depart from there. If you’d like to plan one of these rides, the station itself is a useful landmark when planning your trip.
Gardens and nature in Dunedin
Dunedin Botanic Garden is located in North Dunedin and covers 33 hectares. As New Zealand’s first botanic garden, it holds the status of a six-star garden of international significance. More than 6,800 plant species flourish across the grounds. The sunny lawns offer views of the hills; at the same time, the garden is a habitat for wild native korimako, kererū and tūī. Plant diversity, open lawns, hill views and birdlife all offer different reasons to spend time in the garden. Tūhura Otago Museum’s Nature Gallery takes a different approach, focusing on Otago’s unique wildlife and habitats.
Lan Yuan, the Dunedin Chinese Garden, is located at the corner of Rattray Street and Cumberland Street, opposite Queens Gardens and next to Toitū Otago Settlers Museum. Another useful landmark is that the garden is an easy walk from the Octagon and Dunedin Railway Station. This makes it easy to place a visit in relation to named points around the city. If you’d like to include a garden visit as well as exhibitions, you can choose between the expansive Botanic Garden in North Dunedin and Lan Yuan, with its specific location in the city layout.
A Saturday morning market visit
Otago Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning throughout the year. Vendors sell regional produce and handcrafted goods. If a market visit is one of your travel interests, you can set aside Saturday morning for it. The market adds a distinct focus alongside museums, art and gardens, and draws attention to products from the region.
When choosing a holiday rental in Dunedin, you can base your preferred location on the places and landmarks that matter to your stay. North Dunedin is home to the Botanic Garden; the Octagon and Railway Station are landmarks for Lan Yuan. Also consider whether you’d like to spend more time on art and city history, plants and wildlife, or interactive discoveries. These interests can guide your search without any one experience having to define the whole trip.
You can also explore Mosgiel, Brighton, Port Chalmers, Hyde, Middlemarch, Waikouaiti, Warrington and Waitati as further destinations.
