Lawrence brings together the story of Otago’s first gold rush, historic buildings and trails through varied landscapes. The Tuapeka Goldfields Museum explores Lawrence’s early history as New Zealand’s original gold-mining town. Local trails also tell the story of the past in different ways: a walking route takes you to historic buildings, while the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail connects Lawrence with other places.

Gold History and Buildings in Lawrence

St Patrick’s Church is a landmark in Lawrence and an example of 19th-century church architecture, particularly Petre’s Gothic Revival style. The building also illustrates Lawrence’s central role in the history of Otago’s first gold rush. Those interested in architecture and local history will find a tangible connection here between a prominent building and the town’s gold-mining past.

The Historic Buildings of Lawrence & Bollard Trail takes you to twenty historic buildings, four of which were designed by R. A. Lawson. The trail runs along Ross Place. Historic shops display plaques about their past, while coloured bollards commemorate important figures and the town’s early settlers. This is a way to focus your exploration on the buildings and the history of the people who shaped Lawrence.

Gold-Mining Remains and Trails

Near Lawrence, Gabriels Gully Historic Reserve is located at the site of Otago’s first significant gold discovery. The reserve preserves historic gold-mining remains, including water races, stamper batteries, hydraulic mining sites and mine shafts. These different features give your visit a tangible historical focus: they show the varied traces of gold mining rather than simply recalling its importance to the region.

A 3 km gravel walking track leads through the reserve. There are benches and 14 information panels along the track, and the reserve also has a viewing platform. The route and its stops provide clear guidance for anyone keen to explore gold history in the landscape. This offers a different way to experience Lawrence and its surroundings from visiting the museum or viewing historic buildings in town.

The Clutha Gold Cycle Trail passes through Roxburgh, Millers Flat, Beaumont and Lawrence and can be completed in two to four days. It runs through a fertile valley, a remote gorge and lush farmland, and is suitable for walking and cycling. Its starting point is at the northern end of Lawrence on State Highway 8. The stated duration makes the trail a multi-day focus, while Lawrence’s historic sites offer a different way to shape your trip.

Nature and Other Activities

Lawrence Domain is a wooded recreational area used for walking and cycling. Near Lawrence, Weatherstons combines the ruins of the former Hart’s Black Horse Brewery with daffodil plantings, a woodland garden, a waterfall, a rhododendron forest and other rare plant species. Here, historic ruins sit alongside a diverse plant life.

At Bellview Wetlands, activities include feeding eels, firing a sluice cannon, gold panning and walking through landscaped gardens. The experiences described therefore range from local history and architecture to outdoor activities, plants and hands-on pursuits. You can decide whether to focus your trip on historic sites, trails and cycling, or on nature and gardens.
