Discover Coopers Beach
Accommodation in Coopers Beach
Coopers Beach is a north-facing bay in Doubtless Bay. The long stretch of golden sand is fringed by cliffs and lies between Te Homamu Point to the west and Rangikapiti Point to the east. Pōhutukawa trees provide ample shade at low tide. Near the western end are the mouths of the Kanenane and Otanenui streams.
Walks, Pā Sites and Views
Taumarumaru Scenic Reserve is near Coopers Beach. A short walking track leads to a small beach and offers the chance to explore a pā site. The reserve also offers opportunities for walking and fishing, as well as exploring its history. The short walk to the beach and the other activities provide different reasons to discover the reserve.
Rangikapiti Pā is also nearby and offers sweeping views over Mangōnui Harbour. Rangikapiti Reserve is a destination for day visitors, with views across Doubtless Bay. The pā overlooks the harbour, while the reserve looks out over the bay: these two perspectives give the coastal landscape different points of interest.
Culture in the Far North District
In Mangōnui in the Far North District stands the former Mangonui Courthouse, a well-preserved late-19th-century courthouse built in 1892. As an unusually intact example of a small courthouse, it is of national significance. Near Coopers Beach, Mangōnui Courthouse houses a permanent exhibition of local art and crafts, open year-round. If you want to visit this exhibition specifically, check the current exhibition arrangements in advance.
In Kaitāia, also in the Far North District, Te Ahu Museum at Te Ahu Centre presents the history of the district. Topics include pre-European Māori artefacts, gold mining, Dalmatian heritage, kauri gum and timber, as well as early shipwrecks, missionaries and pioneers. Films, interactive exhibits, virtual landscape tours and informative displays cater to visitors of all ages. The archive includes documents, journals, newspapers, maps and photographs; more than 500 records are available online.
Leisure and Everyday Essentials
Coopers Beach Combined Bowling Club offers bowls, darts, pool, housie and pétanque. Visiting bowlers and members of the public are welcome; non-members must be signed in by a member. As schedules and participation requirements may change, confirm both before visiting.
Coopers Beach has a small shopping centre with everyday essentials. Individual shops and stock may change, so check what is currently available if you have specific items in mind.
