Whakapapa Village is the main gateway to Tongariro National Park and is located on State Highway 48. Different natural experiences come together around the village: a loop track leads to a waterfall, while other routes pass through protected forest or alpine tussockland. There are also views of Ruapehu’s volcanic landscape and, in winter, activities at Whakapapa Ski Area. Which of these aspects you choose to explore can shape your stay.

Walks through forest, past waterfalls and across high country

The Taranaki Falls Walk is a loop track leading to a 20 m-high waterfall. Along the way, you’ll find excellent mountain views and varied terrain. The landscape’s history is visible at the waterfall: the water plunges over an andesite lava flow that erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago. The track is part of the Te Araroa Trail. The waterfall, mountain views and geological context offer several things to look out for as you explore.

The Tama Lakes Track has a different focus. It passes through rolling tussockland and alpine herb fields; the track is well formed and marked. It begins in Whakapapa Village via the Taranaki Falls Walking Track and is a day hike. If you’re planning a day in the high country, you’ll find a different landscape here from the Whakapapanui Walk, which follows the Whakapapanui Stream through protected forest.

On the Whakapapanui Walk, you can also look out for endangered whio, or blue ducks. If you’d rather explore a landscape of wet hollows and distinctive formations, the Silica Rapids Walk is close to Whakapapa Village. A boardwalk crosses boggy ground there, and freshwater crayfish (kōura) live in the seepage pools. The landscape along the track includes diverse vegetation and creamy-white silica terraces. The track entrance is near Whakapapa Village, 250 m above the national park visitor centre.

Finding your bearings at the visitor centre

The Tongariro National Park visitor centre is in Whakapapa Village and is the park’s main gateway. Its displays cover volcanoes, Māori mythology, flora and fauna. You can also use your visit to learn about the region’s natural and cultural topics before deciding which experiences interest you most.

There is a car park for the Round the Mountain Track in Whakapapa Village, opposite the visitor centre. The track entrance is on Ngauruhoe Place, 100 m below the visitor centre. From there, the walk to Waihohonu Hut takes 5 hours and 30 minutes. A section of the Round the Mountain Track between Whakapapa Village and Ohakune Mountain Road can be walked on either the western or eastern side of Ruapehu over 2 or 3 days. In winter, parking along State Highway 48 in Whakapapa Village is limited to 3 hours.

Volcano views and winter experiences

The Sky Waka gondola offers another perspective on the surroundings: during a 1.8 km ride to an altitude of 2,020 m, it provides aerial views of Mt Ruapehu’s volcanic terrain, as well as views across the mountain and Central Plateau. This is a different way to experience the landscape from walking the tracks and may be a key consideration when choosing what to do.

Whakapapa Ski Area has a dedicated beginner area with covered conveyor belts and a slow-moving chairlift. If you’re considering a winter stay, these facilities may help you orient yourself, as can the village’s seasonal parking limit. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Whakapapa Village, you can first decide whether walking tracks, displays, mountain views or the ski area should be the main focus of your stay. Each of these options offers a different emphasis, without requiring any particular accommodation feature.
