In Horowhenua District, coastal experiences and nature watching meet an unusually diverse museum scene. You can focus your outing on beaches and water activities, walk through native forest, or explore Māori, Dutch and pioneering history. When choosing where to stay, it is worth first considering which of these aspects of the trip matter most to you and your family.

Nature and trails

At Papaitonga Scenic Reserve, a short, easy trail loops around a dune lake. Lookouts and opportunities for birdwatching are part of the visit. The reserve is an important refuge for birds that depend on wetlands or lowland forests. If you want to experience nature without planning a long walk, this offers a different kind of outing from Waiopehu Scenic Reserve, where native forest, well-maintained walking trails and birdlife shape the experience, along with views of the Tararua Ranges.

Horseshoe Bend Reserve also has bush trails. At Gladstone Reserve, you can swim safely in the Ōhau River; walking trails lead from there to the Te Araroa walkway. These options range from a walk through bushland to an outing that combines walking and swimming. The western access to the Tararua Northern Crossing from Levin is via Tararua Road and Gladstone Road.

Near the destination is the Manawatū River Estuary, a UNESCO-protected international wetland known for its birdlife and migratory godwits. A total of 95 bird species have been recorded there. If you are interested in birds, you can consider this place as a destination in its own right, alongside the district’s nature reserves.

Coast, water and activities

Foxton Beach is the largest coastal community in Horowhenua. Waitārere Beach offers a swimming beach and good fishing; you can also surf there at a beach break with left- and right-hand waves. Waikawa Beach offers kayaking. When planning your trip, you can weigh up a beach stay, fishing, surfing and a kayak trip rather than treating the coast as a single, uniform holiday experience.

There are plenty of ways to get active on land, too. Foxton Beach Pump Track has circuits for beginners, intermediate riders and highly experienced riders. At Muaūpoko Park, you can combine views of Lake Horowhenua (Punahau) with a visit to the playground. Levin Adventure Park has a zipline, a ropes course and a climbing wall. Shannon’s Toy Circus combines a toy and games museum with mini golf, a skate park, scooter facilities, BMX ramps and foam pits. There is a choice of different focuses: cycling and riding fun, play activities or a nature outing.

Museums, history and food and drink

In Foxton, Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom presents Māori, Dutch and pioneering history through museums, a gallery, exhibitions, a library and a heritage centre. De Molen is a full-size windmill modelled on a 17th-century windmill. The Foxton Flax Strippers Museum offers a different technical perspective: it houses the only still-working flax-stripping and scutching machines in the country. The Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum showcases one of New Zealand’s largest collections of steam engines and early industrial heritage.

MAVtech houses more than 100,000 recordings in various formats and an estimated 5 million feet of film. These collections offer a distinctive focus alongside the historic machinery and regional history exhibits. For families with varied interests, you can choose activities by theme, so not every outing has to offer the same kind of experience.

Food and drink can also help shape your stay: Ōhau Wines offers small-group cellar-door tastings as well as private tasting parties for groups of six or more. Old Courthouse Eatery offers private cooking classes that can be booked for groups of 15 or more. If you want to plan these experiences, take the group size into account when choosing.

You can also explore other places in the district, including Levin and Foxton. Look for a holiday rental based on whether nature trails, the coast, museums or family activities are the main focus of your trip.
