Highland lake and settlement

Lake Tekapo is a highland lake and also a settlement at an altitude of 710 metres. The expansive basin, with its golden tussock grass, shapes the landscape around the settlement. This provides a clear framework for planning a holiday: here, the highland landscape meets opportunities for stargazing, outdoor activities and water-based experiences. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, you can consider which side of Lake Tekapo you’d like to shape your stay—the views of the landscape, outdoor activities or a programme centred on the night sky.

Its location on an important transport route is another useful point of reference: State Highway 8 runs directly through the settlement of Tekapo on the lakeshore. Daily shuttle buses run between Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and Queenstown. If you’re including these places in your trip, you can take the shuttle connections into account when planning your arrival and onward travel. The highway and the daily bus services are separate points of reference for planning your journey; they do not indicate specific travel times.

Stargazing experiences with different focuses

All Dark Sky Project tours depart from the base at 1 Motuariki Lane, Takapō (Lake Tekapo). One of the experiences on offer is the Summit Experience, which takes visitors to the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory at the summit of Mount John in Lake Takapō. The experience includes guided stargazing with powerful telescopes, including a 16-inch telescope. If you’re particularly interested in the night sky and observing it through telescopes, this is a specific focus for your stay.

Tekapo Star Gazing offers a different focus. It departs from Tekapo Springs and combines guided stargazing with access to the thermal pools. This gives you a choice between two distinct stargazing experiences: the Summit Experience, with the observatory at the summit of Mount John, and Tekapo Star Gazing, which combines stargazing with the thermal pools. This difference can be helpful when choosing accommodation if you’d like to plan your trip around the experience you prefer.

Thermal pools and activities in the regional park

Tekapo Springs has three thermal pools and an aqua play area with two cooler pools. For families who’d like to include water activities in their trip, this means there are two distinct areas to choose from: the thermal pools and the aqua play area with its cooler pools.

Lake Tekapo Regional Park has 24 kilometres of cycling and walking trails. There are also orienteering courses and swimming spots. This gives you different ways to enjoy an active stay: you can consider the cycling or walking trails, try an orienteering course or plan a visit to the swimming spots as a separate activity. The trails are a different kind of activity from orienteering or swimming. Which of these matters to you can be a personal factor when choosing a holiday rental.

A cultural connection to the Mackenzie Country

The Church of the Good Shepherd was built as a memorial to the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country. It adds a historical connection to the region alongside its nature and activity offerings. If you’re interested in the history of the Mackenzie Country as well as the highland lake and stargazing opportunities, you can include this in your own travel plans. Taken together, these different interests can all play a part in choosing Lake Tekapo as a holiday destination, without limiting your stay to a single activity.

More places to consider for your trip: Burkes Pass, Albury, Mt Cook, Kimbell, Fairlie and Twizel.
