Around Clarence, the landscape, regional art and historic huts take centre stage. The nearby Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence conservation area brings together geological features and rare native nature. The Kaikōura Cultural Artwork Trail adds artworks and stories of the Kaikōura coast to the area; routes also lead to named huts and river destinations. This gives you different options when planning your trip: nature, culture or a particular route.

Conservation area and clear night skies

Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence includes some of the highest mountains in New Zealand outside the Southern Alps. The area is of national geological significance and is home to many rare, interesting and unique native plants and animals. This means nature and geology are part of the local experience, alongside the destination’s cultural themes.

The conservation area is also known for its clear night skies and is well suited to stargazing and astrophotography. Nature lovers will find that, alongside the mountains and native wildlife and plants, the night sky offers another focus. The landscape, geological features and night skies provide different ways to shape your stay around Clarence.

Art and stories along the Kaikōura Cultural Artwork Trail

The Kaikōura Cultural Artwork Trail follows a scenic 60-kilometre stretch of State Highway 1 from Oaro to Waiau Toa (Clarence River). The route includes seven safe stopping points. Trail features include sandblasted murals, Pouwhenua, Tekoteko, native planting and information panels. The artworks make the trail a regional discovery route where landscape and cultural stories come together.

Master carvers Riki Manuel (Ngāti Porou) and Fayne Robinson (Ngāi Tahu) created four Pouwhenua and six Tekoteko for the trail. The works convey tangata stories and the whakapapa of Waitaha, Ngāti Māmoe and the Ngāti-Kurī hapū of Ngāi Tahu. Members of these groups settled along the Kaikōura coast in succession over the past 800 years. Those interested in the region’s history and culture can therefore look beyond the artworks’ forms: they are connected to the stories of these groups and the coast.

Historic huts and routes along the river and Seymour

Several huts in the Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence area near Clarence are considered historic huts: Black Spur Slab Hut, Bluff Dump Hut, Horse Flat Hut, Old Willows Hut and Tent Poles Hut. Their names are another historic aspect of the area. They complement the art and nature themes, without requiring every itinerary to focus on the same things.

The routes described also differ in their destinations and geographic features. A route along the Seymour leads to the Clarence River and Forbes Hut, formerly known as Seymour Hut. Beyond Forbes Hut, a route follows the Clarence River upstream to Palmer Hut below Dillion Cone. The turn-off for the Palmer Hut route is two kilometres up the Seymour from the Clarence. Another route follows the Clarence River via Quail Flat to Goose Flat Hut, which lies 22 kilometres downstream from Forbes Hut.

If you plan to take one of these routes, take note of its destination: Forbes Hut, Palmer Hut and Goose Flat Hut are described on different routes. Track and access conditions can change; check them before you travel. This keeps your route planning focused on the specific destinations rather than treating the different routes as one continuous track.
