Routes across the peninsula

The Peninsula Loop is about nine kilometres long. It passes Ōmokoroa Golf Club and Cooney Reserve, then follows the water back to the Domain. The Omokoroa Bird Walk offers another way to experience the peninsula. It goes around the peninsula, and ten informative signs explain the birds that can be seen there or nearby. Harbour, beach and Domain

Omokoroa Domain also has practical facilities for visitors: pōhutukawa trees provide shade, and there are picnic tables and public toilets. A playground that opened in 2022 is also part of the Domain. There is a free gas barbecue at the northern end, and access to the wharf is at the southern end. These different spots can help you choose which of the Domain’s public areas to visit, depending on what you have in mind—from a picnic to a walk down to the water.

Coastal scenery and history

Gerald Crapp Historic Reserve is a strip of coastline around the headland of Omokoroa Point. There, a tree stump was carved by Warwich Lilley of Rotorua as a likeness of Reverend Joseph Tice Gellibrand. So alongside the coastal scenery, there is a specific work of art depicting a named person. Wai-Huri Pa in Gerald Crapp Reserve offers a different historical focus: this significant archaeological site is marked by its deep ditch, which is still visible.

Hamurana Reserve also offers its own coastal views. The shoreline consists of large rocks rather than sand; the rocks are part of work to protect the shoreline. Picnic tables and shade trees are also available. A short path with a few steps leads from the reserve to the water. This shoreline is therefore quite different in character from a sandy beach, and the short path and steps are useful to know about when finding your way around.
