Hot Springs and Sinter Landscape

Ātiamuri’s geothermal system includes three chloride springs in an area used for farming. Two of the three known hot alkaline chloride springs currently deposit sinter; they are known as Whangapoa Springs. Extensive historical sinter deposits surround Whangapoa Springs. Current sinter formation and older deposits give the geothermal landscape distinct layers of time.

Whangapoa Springs are in a small Department of Conservation reserve, near the intersections of Ohakuri Road, Matapan Road and Ngautuku Road. The Department of Conservation is restoring the native vegetation and springs around the site. The geothermal features and the landscape restoration together help define the character of this area.

Lake Atiamuri and Trail Experiences

The Whakamaru Trail starts at the boat ramp on the shore of Lake Atiamuri. From this starting point, there are panoramic views of the tranquil-looking lake, surrounded by forest. The views are directly connected to the trailhead. The Whakamaru Trail is 26 kilometres long and rated Grade 3, intermediate. Its length and rating provide two specific points of reference: the extent of the route and its stated level of difficulty.

Shortly after the start, the trail reaches Atiamuri Power Station and runs alongside a 171-metre-long concrete dam. From the power station, it continues to Atiamuri Road Bridge, where it crosses the river. The lakeside scenery at the start is followed by the power station, dam and river crossing. If you’re interested in both scenery and engineering structures, this sequence offers a distinctive perspective on the route.

The Waikato River Trails offer a different focus for outdoor activities: this varied network is designed for mountain biking, walking and running. It starts in the south in the village of Atiamuri and follows the river to the southern end of Lake Karapiro in the north. While the Whakamaru Trail has a stated length and difficulty rating, the Waikato River Trails emphasise the variety of activities and the longer route along the river. You can consider whether a clearly described trail or a network for different types of activity better suits your travel interests.

Notable Nearby Places

Te Kōhatu-o-Hatupatu stands beside the road near Atiamuri, on State Highway 1 and about 26 kilometres south of Tokoroa. This named rock adds a distinctive nearby landmark to the landscape and trail themes.

Mt Pohaturoa also rises nearby, standing 240 metres above the river and reaching an elevation of 520 metres. Near Atiamuri Bridge, the mountain can be seen from State Highway 1; it overlooks a lake created by the Atiamuri hydroelectric power station. This gives you two different perspectives on the area: a view of a prominent mountain and the connection between the power station and the lake.

More to Explore in the South Waikato District

The wider South Waikato District offers a different perspective. The NZ Timber Museum is just south of Putāruru on State Highway 1. It was established in 1927 to celebrate, document and preserve the history of New Zealand’s timber industry, particularly in the South Waikato District. In central Tokoroa, the Talking Poles are a collection of carved poles representing Tokoroa’s different cultures, clubs and organisations, created for locals and visitors. Timber history and sculptures offer a different focus from Atiamuri’s geothermal springs and landscape.

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, the mix of experiences you want is a useful place to start: Atiamuri offers springs, a sinter landscape, Lake Atiamuri and trail experiences; the South Waikato District also offers cultural and historical attractions. If you’re travelling with family, you could first consider whether nature and active trails or a broader look at regional history and sculptures should shape your stay.
