Nanuya Balavu Island: Reefs, Culture and Mantas
Accommodation in Nanuya Balavu Island
Nanuya Balavu Island is in Fiji’s Yasawa Group and combines an impressive underwater world with cultural experiences on land. The island is home to Mantaray Island Resort; many of the activities described are associated with this resort. For planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to consider the different highlights: would you like to experience manta ray season, learn about the island’s history or plan guided activities on land?
Beaches, views and reef life
Mantaray Island has nine white-sand beaches to visit as you explore the island. A viewpoint offers views of the surrounding islands and tropical reef. The reef just off Mantaray Island Resort is described as rich in vibrant coral gardens, parrotfish, sea anemones, clownfish, moray eels and pipefish. It has been a voluntarily protected marine park since 2003. This combination of beaches, views and reef gives your island stay different perspectives, from the coastline to underwater habitats.
Manta rays and activities in the water
During manta ray season, from May to October, Pacific manta rays are found in the waters around the resort; the seasonal timing may naturally vary. Manta rays also glide through the water off the southern tip of Korosamoa. Guided manta tours are designed to make encounters as gentle as possible and avoid disturbing the animals’ natural behaviour. A seven-day private yacht charter route through the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands includes Nanuya Balavu; during the season, guests can swim with manta rays there. This route, described by Tourism Fiji, and the conditions for wildlife encounters may change.
Mantaray Island Resort offers guided snorkelling trips, subject to the operator’s availability. SSI (Scuba Schools International) diving courses are also offered; these too are subject to availability. At Manta Dive, night dives are available on request and may depend on conditions and bookings. The resort also describes itself as Fiji’s only accredited freediving provider and offers the opportunity to learn to dive on a single breath. As you plan your days, these options vary considerably, from a guided snorkelling trip to courses and a dive on request.
Island traditions and stories
The weekly Fiji Night on Mantaray Island includes a Lovo demonstration and a Meke performance featuring traditional Fijian songs and dances. Guided walks on Mantaray Island share knowledge about the traditional uses of native plants. Craft classes focus on palm weaving and making coconut jewellery. Alongside experiences in the water, these activities offer opportunities for shared cultural experiences and discovery on land.
Korosamoa offers both a story and a natural experience: the rocks there are still said to bear the marks of Sulua’s tentacles. An island legend also tells how Buli Balavu split a landmass into four islands, including Nanuya Balavu. The attribution to Sulua and the story of Buli Balavu remain part of the oral legend, rather than a verified historical explanation.
For an excursion farther afield, the village of Soso is two islands away from Nanuya Balavu. Village tours take place daily and can be arranged through the resort’s activities team. This can add a glimpse of village life to a stay focused on reefs and beaches.
Getting there and finding your way around the islands
Transfers to Mantaray Island Resort in the Yasawa Group are available by fast catamaran or helicopter. A scenic flight from Nadi to the resort takes 30 minutes; this duration is not tied to a specific type of flight. In the wider region, the Yasawa Flyer runs daily, operated by Yasawa Adventures Fiji, also known as South Sea Cruises. The scenic cruise passes many islands on its way to the northern Yasawa Group. Check transfer details before your trip: schedules and prices may change.
Experiences to guide your accommodation search
Mantaray Island Day Spa is also part of the resort’s offering, with massages and beauty treatments in a peaceful hilltop setting overlooking the sea. The resort’s menu features locally caught fish and seasonal tropical fruit. Together with manta watching, snorkelling and cultural activities, these offer a broad picture of possible travel interests, although not every stay needs to have the same focus.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a trip to Nanuya Balavu Island, the experiences that interest you most can help shape your choice of destination. Manta season adds a seasonal highlight; walks, crafts and Fiji Night offer other ways to plan your stay. So first consider which of these island experiences matter to your trip, then compare suitable accommodation for the stay you have in mind.
