Rocky Gully: History, Culture and Recreation
Accommodation in Rocky Gully
Rocky Gully combines a post-war founding story with the area’s distinct cultural significance. The town was established in the 1950s under the War Service Settlement Scheme; Chullurup is the Aboriginal name for the area around Rocky Gully. A playground, tennis court and Higgins Park add specific places for recreation.
Settlement History and Timber
Initiated by the Australian Government after the Second World War, the scheme aimed to increase the area of land used for agriculture in the south of Western Australia and resettle former servicemen. Rocky Gully was established under the War Service Settlement Scheme. The town’s beginnings can therefore be linked to an initiative intended to support agricultural use and the resettlement of former servicemen.
Rocky Gully also served as a centre for logging and timber processing. This offers a different perspective on the town’s development from the settlement scheme: the scheme describes the context of the town’s founding, while timber processing reveals another role the town played.
Names and Cultural Memory
One possible explanation for the name Rocky Gully points to a road with a rocky surface that crossed a depression near the present-day town. Chullurup, the Aboriginal name for the area around Rocky Gully, is distinct from this. It means “place of the white ants”; the Noongar Elders held the area known by this name in deep reverence.
In 2023, former residents and descendants of former servicemen, with support from the Rocky Gully CWA, agreed to establish the First Years Memorial. The project was intended to honour and remember the district’s pioneers. The town’s founding history and the memorial are separated in time: one concerns the town’s establishment in the 1950s, while the other is a memorial project agreed upon in 2023.
Recreation and a Historic Gathering
Current recreational facilities in Rocky Gully include a playground, a tennis court and the Higgins Park oval. If you’re planning a trip with children, the playground may be a practical factor when choosing a destination. The tennis court and oval cater to other recreational interests and put these facilities right in town.
A report from March 2023 covered the Rocky Gully Revival Show and Shine: about 70 vehicles were displayed on the former school oval at Higgins Park, and around 500 people came through the entrance gates. These approximate figures give an impression of the scale of the gathering. Higgins Park thus connects the town’s recreational facilities with a specific historic event.
