Discover Dongara through its well-preserved local history and the landscape along the Irwin River. The Thungara Trail 3 – Irwin Heritage River Nature Trail follows the riverbank from the centre of historic Dongara; the loop is 4.6 kilometres long and starts at the Irwin River Lookout. A specific riverside trail and a place shaped by history are two distinct ways to plan your stay.

A Historic Cultural Landscape

The Dongara townsite is considered a relatively intact example of a settlement whose preserved built heritage shows its development from the mid-1850s to the present day (2012). The elements throughout the townsite, individually and collectively, illustrate the way of life associated with the establishment and continued existence of a small regional town centre since the 1850s. Together, they form a significant cultural landscape. Those interested in local history can therefore get to know Dongara not only through a single building, but also through the built heritage preserved across the entire townsite.

One specific example is Russ Cottage, built around 1869. The Irwin District Museum also has a historic connection to the town: it is housed in the former Dongara Police Station, Courthouse and Gaol. This former building was the first police station built in Dongara. The museum’s present name and the building’s former function offer two distinct reference points for exploring local history.

Walking by the River and Estuary

The Thungara Trail 3 – Irwin Heritage River Nature Trail offers a way to experience Dongara on a riverside path. Along the trail, you can spot black swans, pelicans and other bird species native to the river and its mouth. The riverside trail is especially suited to travellers who want to include wildlife watching and exercise in their days.

Nearby, the Irwin River Mouth Boardwalk on Ocean Drive also invites you to take a walk with views of the Irwin River mouth. Waterbirds that can be spotted there include pelicans, ducks, terns, herons, egrets and cormorants. The range of species mentioned makes the boardwalk another way to combine views of the river mouth with birdwatching.
