With 37 kilometres of coastline, the City of Rockingham offers plenty of ways to enjoy a holiday by the water. The city is known for safe swimming in calm, shallow water and its sandy beaches. There are also opportunities to experience the coast by paddling, diving or snorkelling, as well as nature trails and places with history and art.

Water experiences along the coast and foreshore

The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park Paddle is an 8-kilometre kayak trail along the Rockingham coast. Those interested in coastal diving will find the Churchill Park Dive Trail about 60 metres’ wade from the Rockingham Foreshore. Point Peron is known as a place for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding; its limestone caves and swim-through caves also provide a backdrop for coastal diving and snorkelling. In Safety Bay, The Pond is a spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The options vary not only by activity, but also by whether you prefer paddling, diving or harnessing the wind on the water.

The Rockingham Beach Foreshore offers more to explore at the beach: its redevelopment included an accessible lookout and a Beach Bowl. A boardwalk connects the foreshore with the beach. The coast also has facilities for launching recreational boats, public jetties, free boat moorings and opportunities for beach fishing.

Birds, penguins and unique habitats

The Anne Mueller Environmental Walk combines an easy, 3-kilometre loop around Lake Richmond with opportunities to observe nature. Bird species found there include Australian pelicans, black swans, Australian shovelers, black-necked ducks, white-faced herons and common greenshanks. Those interested in habitats can also look out over an endangered thrombolite community from a boardwalk at Lake Richmond.

The protected Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is home to dolphins, seals, penguins and pelicans. Cape Peron offers coastal views across the marine park. Little penguins live on Penguin Island—the only penguin species that lives permanently in Australian waters. They are also known as blue penguins or fairy penguins. The 1.5-kilometre Penguin Island Boardwalk offers walkers close encounters with flora and fauna. In Rockingham, wildlife watching, coastal views and trails through distinctive natural surroundings offer different ways to enjoy the area.

History, art and events

There are specific reasons to explore Rockingham beyond its beaches and water. Day Cottage is one of the city’s oldest surviving houses and a rare example of a colonial-era limestone cottage. The Rockingham Museum is housed in an Art Deco building, the former Rockingham Road Board Building, dating from 1946/47. Its many exhibitions cover Rockingham’s history and are designed to inform and educate visitors and children.

The Rockingham Arts Centre offers professionally curated exhibitions, workshops and development programs. The Rockingham Beach Cup offers a different kind of shared experience: this major event brings visitors to Rockingham every year. It is worth checking its dates separately when planning your trip. Nature, culture and events each have their own character, so you can choose whether your trip will focus more on observing nature at Lake Richmond, coastal experiences or a cultural program.

Choose Rockingham as a holiday destination

Rockingham is a short drive or train journey of about 45 minutes from Perth. When looking for a holiday rental, the experiences that matter most to you can be a helpful starting point: Would you mainly like to spend time by the water, are you interested in wildlife and birdwatching, or would you also like to visit the museum and arts centre? These options appeal to different travel interests, without any one focus describing the whole city.

Rockingham combines a long coastline and a range of water activities with nature trails, a historic cottage, a museum and an arts centre. If you would like to compare more destinations, include Baldivis in your search.
