Burswood brings together a range of reasons to visit: the Swan River and a large park, cultural themes, active pursuits and event venues. Its varied highlights offer different ways to get to know Burswood.

Enjoy the Park and Riverfront

Burswood Park covers 53 hectares and sits on the banks of the Swan River on the Burswood Peninsula. The park offers city views, and its features include birdlife and other wildlife. Walking trails and a heritage sculpture trail add further interest. The park brings nature-watching and cultural discoveries together in one place. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can focus on different interests here, from a walk to wildlife-watching or the sculpture trail.

Stories and Design by the River

At Burswood Park, the River Journeys Interpretation Node presents traditional stories of Joorolup. Visitors can also learn about the significance of this land, where Jarrah forests once grew, and the role of the yakkan in sustaining life in the river. This gives a visit a cultural focus alongside the sights of the park and riverfront.

Another striking feature is the 370-metre-long Matagarup Bridge. Its graceful arches can represent black and white swans or the Wagyl, a water serpent of significance to local Noongar culture. The bridge is a tourist attraction and connects the Burswood Peninsula with the Perth CBD. It also connects Optus Stadium and the peninsula with East Perth; since July 2018, it has provided pedestrians with access between Burswood and East Perth. You can also plan a visit around the places linked by these connections.

Active Pursuits with Different Highlights

Matagarup Mini Golf is an 18-hole course with Western Australian themes in Burswood Park by the Swan River. One planning detail to keep in mind: the facility’s front nine holes are wheelchair accessible. A different kind of activity is offered by Matagarup Zip Climb, a family adventure area on the Burswood Peninsula. The climb includes 314 steps and leads to an open viewing platform 72 metres above the Swan River. You can choose between very different activities: a themed mini-golf course or a climb with a view.

Theatre Shows and Sporting Events

Crown Theatre hosts musicals, concerts and live theatre performances. Its two-level auditorium has seating for up to 2,260 people. Optus Stadium hosts AFL, soccer, rugby league and rugby union games, as well as concerts by some of the world’s biggest musicians. The programs are quite distinct: theatre focuses on stage performances, while the stadium features a range of sports and concerts. If events are an important part of your trip, you can take these different offerings into account when choosing your travel dates and accommodation.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Burswood Station is on the Armadale/Thornlie railway line, at the northeastern end of Burswood Park. From the station, it is a 15-minute walk through the park to the banks of the Swan River. This specific route information helps you navigate between the railway station, park and riverfront; it applies to this route only. When looking for a holiday rental in Burswood, you can then consider whether the park, cultural themes, an active pursuit or events will be the main focus of your stay.
