Underbool brings together a very specific pioneer history, memorial sites and ideas for regional outings. The Pioneer Memorial Wall is located on the Mallee Highway in the town centre. It was built and unveiled in 2002 to honour the men, women and families who sought a new life in the Victorian Mallee District between Torrita and Boinka. Its focus is therefore not just the general history of the Mallee, but the journey of people who settled in a clearly defined part of the district.

A wall bearing personal traces

For pioneer families, the plaques list their arrival date and the local parish or allotment. For pioneers outside agriculture, their occupation is also given. The inscriptions thus trace a path from family arrivals and local connections to working lives, giving the memorial several specific biographical layers.

Remembrance in Outen Park

The Memorial Gates in Outen Park commemorate a different aspect of local history. They are named after Roy Outen, who is believed to have been the first soldier from Underbool to die in the First World War; he was 19 years old. One clearly dated example of communal remembrance is the 2023 ANZAC Day march: participants set off from the primary school at 6:20 am and proceeded along Monash Ave. Five students carried the letters A, N, Z, A and C. The march reached the gates of Outen Park, where the dawn service began.

Community and accommodation

The Underbool Swimming Pool is also part of the local community’s history: it has been a community facility since 1974. Travellers often camp at the Underbool Recreation Reserve. If camping is an option for your trip, check the current arrangements in advance.

Underbool as a gateway to regional destinations

Underbool is a gateway to “Pink Lakes Country” and Murray-Sunset National Park. The Mallee Track Highway provides a strong tourism connection between South Australia and New South Wales. For tours around Ouyen, Mallee Tours offers half-day or full-day 4×4 trips through remote national parks, including the Pink Lakes west of Underbool. Check current availability in advance. This means the town’s memorial sites and regional destinations offer different ways to focus your trip.

Planning the right trip

When choosing a holiday rental in Underbool, you can start with a specific question: do you want your trip to focus mainly on local pioneer and memorial history, or would you like to set aside half a day or a full day for a 4×4 tour? If you’re travelling with children, the names, life dates and the five students carrying the ANZAC letters can provide conversation starters about the town’s history.
