Rushworth is set amid the world’s largest Box-Ironbark forest and combines this landscape with a local history that can be seen in its streetscape. The town was founded in 1853 during the Victorian gold rush. You can stroll along High Street and read the plaques for the community project “Walk Through Time” on numerous buildings. Walking through Rushworth, you can get to know the town through its buildings and the historical information displayed there.

Historic traces in the streetscape

Rushworth’s High Street is lined with historic buildings, many classified by the National Trust. A hundred-year-old band rotunda, also classified by the National Trust, is located there too. The Rushworth Museum is housed in the former Mechanics Institute and contains more than 4,000 objects relating to local history.

Railway traces

Rushworth’s railway past is also clearly visible. The remains of the old railway turntable can be seen east of the CFA station site; the goods shed and platform have also been preserved. A significant part of the track infrastructure remains on the former railway site. The Waranga Rail Trail is an accessible 19 km route along the disused railway line from Rushworth to Murchison. This means the railway-line perspective extends beyond the individual preserved structures in Rushworth. In the wider destination of Campaspe Shire, the trail also passes Waranga Basin, bushland and farmland. Check local conditions before setting out, as they can change.

Water activities nearby

Harriman Point is near Rushworth. A dual-lane boat ramp installed there by Goulburn-Murray Water in 2022 improves access for boating, sailing, windsurfing, fishing, jet skiing and kayaking. Facilities can change, so check the current status of the site before visiting. For trip planning, this adds a nearby water-based focus to the town’s trails and historical insights.

Market and regional history

A report dated 6 November 2024 described the Rushworth Community Market as a monthly market held on the third Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm at Rushworth Village Green, 25 High St. The offerings listed at the time included plants, fresh produce, arts and crafts, gifts, food and wine. The mix of stalls can change; check the current date before visiting.

In the wider destination of Campaspe Shire, the Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex offers a distinct regional history focus. The local history museum and resource centre displays historical exhibits from the district, including a shearing shed, a blacksmith’s forge, a dairy shed and a historic classroom, as well as a PMG hut, a Masonic lodge, a restored tram, a pop-top caravan, locally built tractors and a steam wagon. In contrast to Rushworth’s gold rush history, High Street and railway heritage, Lockington focuses on a broad collection of buildings and objects from the district’s history.
