Fishing takes place at Mt William Creek near Mokepilly. Nearby, Lake Fyans adds water activities, lakeside trails and cycling routes to the area’s attractions; the lake is one of the region’s most important recreational lakes.

Water activities and trails at Lake Fyans

Activities at Lake Fyans include swimming, water skiing, jet skiing and sailing; hunting and caravaning also take place there. The lake is near Mokepilly, not in the town itself. Fishing at Mt William Creek and activities at the lake are therefore different points of interest to consider when planning your trip.

A 9.6 km walking trail runs along the shore of Lake Fyans. Smaller trails provide access to plant life, as well as nature and birdwatching trails. This means there is both a defined lakeside route and a network of shorter trails focused on observation. If you plan to spend time at the lake, you can choose between the lakeside trail and the smaller paths. Check current trail conditions before your visit.

Cycling the Lake Fyans Loop

The Lake Fyans Loop is an easy 37 km cycling circuit that starts and finishes in Halls Gap. A 7 km section runs along Lake Fyans and Mokepilly Road. On the return journey, a 12 km cycling section follows Grampians Road back to Halls Gap. The endpoints are important for orientation: the Loop is a regional circuit associated with Halls Gap, not a circuit that starts in Mokepilly. Check road conditions before cycling.

The different distances also reflect different kinds of outings: 9.6 km refers to the lakeside trail, while 37 km is the cycling circuit. This helps you distinguish a walk by the lake from a longer cycling trip when planning your day; the Loop starts and finishes in Halls Gap.

Roads and choosing a location

Road information in Mokepilly can also help with orientation. A 2021 municipal road register classifies sections of Mokepilly Road between Grampians Road and Cool Waters Road as sealed rural collector roads. It lists sections of Williams Lane between Mount Dryden Road and Mokepilly Road as unsealed rural residential access roads. The two roads therefore differ both in surface and function. If your particular route uses either of these connections, take this classification into account when planning and check the current route.

When choosing a holiday rental, you can weigh up the different locations: fishing at the creek is directly associated with Mokepilly, Lake Fyans is nearby, and the cycling circuit described starts and finishes in Halls Gap. This lets you take your preferred focus for your stay into account when choosing a base.
