Gipsy Point is a peninsula that extends into the upper lake of Mallacoota Inlet. The settlement lies upstream from Mallacoota and about 1 km downstream from the confluence of the Wallagaraugh River and the Genoa River. Mallacoota Inlet is navigable from Mallacoota to Gipsy Point. Lakes, rivers and Croajingolong National Park are part of the landscape surrounding the settlement. If you want to make waterscapes and nature the focus of your holiday, this gives you a specific point of reference when choosing a destination.

Birdlife and bushland

There are 280 bird species in Gipsy Point, including white-bellied sea eagles, lyrebirds and azure kingfishers. A walking track leads from Gipsy Point into Croajingolong National Park, where you can spot parrots, whistlers, fantails, thornbills, sea eagles and various seabirds, among others. The variety of birds makes the area especially interesting for travellers who want to take their time observing nature.

For walking, consider the Point Tip Walk, an easy bushland track in Croajingolong National Park near Gipsy Point. It complements birdwatching with a walk through the bushland. If you would rather plan a walk through this landscape than spend time on the water, the track offers a possible focus in its own right. No information about the track's duration or length is implied.

Wildlife along the shore is also part of the natural scenery: goannas and colourful Gippsland water dragons are often seen along the lake near Gipsy Point. Together with the large mob of kangaroos that Gipsy Point is home to, this offers another point of interest for visitors who want to observe animals in their natural surroundings. The wildlife here therefore includes birds, reptiles and kangaroos.

Out on the water

Gipsy Point has a boat ramp for launching boats. Visitors can hire a boat with the assistance of Gipsy Point Lodge to explore Mallacoota Inlet. You can also paddle a canoe up the Genoa River to Gipsy Point. These options offer different experiences: boat hire is geared towards exploring the inlet, while canoeing follows the course of the Genoa River.

In summer, Gipsy Point Lodge offers Hobie kayaks and canoes for hire. The landscape offers more than one way to enjoy it: the inlet, rivers and bushland each shape different holiday experiences.

Mallacoota Inlet is known for its abundant black bream and dusky flathead. These fish add to the picture of the inlet as a habitat and give the waterscape another distinctive feature.

Dining and choosing accommodation

Gipsy Point Lodge has a licensed restaurant open on selected days. As a place to stay, Gipsy Point mainly appeals to travellers whose holiday plans centre on Mallacoota Inlet, river journeys, bushland and wildlife watching.
