Flowerdale: Nature on King Parrot Creek and Culture
Accommodation in Flowerdale
Flowerdale combines nature watching along King Parrot Creek with memorial sites, murals and a seasonal flower event. These varied experiences offer different perspectives on the area: riverside vegetation and possible wildlife sightings, remembrance of the 2009 bushfires, art on the Dindi Arts Trail and a seasonal visit to a flower farm. When planning your trip, you can decide whether nature, culture or a time-specific experience will shape your stay.
Along King Parrot Creek
Moores Road Reserve lies on the banks of King Parrot Creek at the Kenny Road bridge. Facilities include toilets, picnic tables and an electric barbecue. As local facilities may change, check conditions before visiting.
If you keep quiet at Moores Road Reserve, you may be able to spot a platypus. A sighting is not guaranteed; this possible wildlife experience is better suited to a quiet moment by the water than to a scheduled activity.
Coonans Reserve is a six-hectare Crown land area on King Parrot Creek in Flowerdale. The creekside vegetation includes manna gums and candlebark gums, as well as various riparian shrubs. The greenery along the creek provides a botanical highlight alongside the possible wildlife sightings at Moores Road Reserve.
Coonans Reserve is one of the district’s key locations for nocturnal wildlife spotting with spotlights. Organised walks may not be available all the time. The two reserves offer distinctly different nature experiences: Moores Road Reserve combines possible platypus sightings with picnic facilities, while Coonans Reserve brings together creekside vegetation and nocturnal wildlife watching.
Memorial sites and murals
The Flowerdale Bushfire Memorial honours the eleven people who lost their lives in the 2009 bushfires in the Flowerdale area. The Flowerdale Memorial Garden has 13 stones representing the 13 community members who died in the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009. The two sites commemorate the losses in different ways: one as a memorial and the other as a garden with memorial stones.
The Dindi Arts Trail adds a visual perspective to the memorial sites. It features ten distinct murals at six locations, including Flowerdale. In this way, remembrance of the bushfires and mural art stand alongside one another as distinct cultural highlights.
Blooms at golden hour
Gather & Bloom – Twilight Pick is a seasonal golden-hour event held when the farm is in full bloom. Unlike the wildlife-watching experiences, the event is shaped by the flowering season. If you’d like to include it in your trip, check the announced dates, as the seasonal program may change.
Find a holiday rental to suit your travel interests
