Berriwillock: History and Mallee Golf
Accommodation in Berriwillock
Berriwillock combines a distinctive local history with a seasonal swimming pool and golf in the flat Mallee landscape. A war memorial and several buildings tell a story that can be traced through specific dates, people and materials. Visitors who enjoy combining a trip with local discoveries will find different points of interest here: memorials, the history of a store and a golf course with a distinctive connection to the landscape.
Memorials and Local History
The Berriwillock War Memorial features a soldier figure carved from pink granite, dating from the First World War. Four columns support the figure above a granite plinth. The memorial was unveiled on 6 May 1920. Plaques were added later to commemorate people who served in the Second World War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The memorial thus reflects both its origins after the First World War and the later commemorations. The figure, columns and plinth give the memorial a clear, multi-part form.
The history of the Mills Store can also be traced through a precise chronology. The store has served the Berriwillock community since 1925. Harold bought it from Fred Higman on 1 May 1925, his 21st birthday. A modern extension was built and opened in 1983. The birthday, the seller and the dates make the store’s history a specific part of local history; the extension adds a later change to the building.
The Golden Crown Hotel was built in Berriwillock in 1896 by Fairbanks and Wilson. It was constructed using local limestone and bricks made and fired on the banks of Tyrrell Creek. This places the building not only in a particular period: its materials also connect it to the surrounding area. The Golden Crown Hotel is also Berriwillock’s local pub. Its building history and its role in the town today come together in one name.
Seasonal Experiences in the Mallee
The Berriwillock Swimming Pool is a seasonal pool. If swimming is part of your travel plans, check in advance that your travel dates fall within the season. Golf is also seasonal: the Berriwillock Golf Club is a 9-hole sand-scrape course. The nine holes describe its format; its location in the flat Mallee landscape adds a distinct connection to the surrounding scenery.
The course features Mallee trees, along with elevated and sloping sandy areas. These features give it a distinctive character beyond the number of holes: the landscape and course design are equally part of the picture. If you’d like to include golf in your stay, remember to factor the season into your plans. Swimming in the seasonal pool and golf at the seasonal club cater to different interests when planning a trip.
Berriwillock is located on the Calder Highway, a road connection that can help you find your way to the destination. When looking for a holiday rental or holiday home in Berriwillock, it’s worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your stay: local history, seasonal swimming or golf in the Mallee?
