Aspendale brings together several points of interest: its wide foreshore, reserves with specific play and recreation facilities, and historical connections dating back to the late 19th century. Walking and cycling paths connect Aspendale Foreshore with Mordialloc Creek Reserve; two historical dates point to a racecourse and a car rally. This makes it possible to discover the destination from different perspectives, from its sandy beach to its local past.

Beach and Foreshore

Aspendale Foreshore Precinct covers a three-kilometre stretch with a wide, flat sandy beach and low sand dunes. It is a natural focus if you want the beach to shape your stay. Watkins Reserve provides access to the beach from the highway. Aspendale Beach also has a paid car park with accessible parking. Check its accessibility and fees again before you arrive.

Playgrounds and Sport in the Reserves

The reserves offer a different focus. Iluka Reserve has a playground and football goalposts; the oval is fenced and has goalposts for Australian Rules football and soccer. If you’re travelling with children and also want to plan for soccer, Australian Rules football or a playground, you can make Iluka a specific reserve to visit.

Albany Crescent Reserve’s playground is especially varied. The train-themed playground includes climbing structures, slides, monkey bars, a telescope and a tunnel; there is also a Red Rattler train and a station. A flying fox, seesaws, swings and a carousel round out the facilities. Compared with Iluka, the focus here is more on a variety of play equipment; at Iluka, the playground is combined with a fenced oval for two sports.

Paths and Banksia Woodland

Groves Reserve offers a different landscape, preserving a remnant of Banksia woodland between the highway and the railway line. Walking and cycling paths in the reserve connect Aspendale Foreshore with Mordialloc Creek Reserve. For planning purposes, the reserve offers two points of interest: the Banksia woodland as a landscape feature and the connection between the two places as a walking or cycling outing.

Historical Traces

Two dated events are part of the area’s history. Aspendale Racecourse opened on 14 April 1891. In 1904, the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) held its first car rally at Aspendale Park. These events point to two different themes: the racecourse and an early car rally. If you’d like to discover Aspendale through its past as well, you can include these two historical connections in your travel plans alongside the beach and reserves.

When looking for a holiday rental in Aspendale, consider what you want to focus on during your holiday: should beach time shape your stay, or are reserves and walking or cycling paths just as important?
