At Ben Lomond Alpine Resort Base in Upper Blessington, winter sports offerings meet practical visitor information. At the same time, the area is not just about winter: the wider region offers summer activities at Ben Lomond, and the North Esk Memorial Hall commemorates the world wars. When choosing holiday accommodation, the time of year you plan to travel and the activities you are looking for may therefore be deciding factors.

Winter activities at Ben Lomond

In the wider region, Ben Lomond offers 6 km of downhill ski runs suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. At Ben Lomond Alpine Resort Base in Upper Blessington, you can buy lift passes and combination packages that include a lift pass and ski or snowboard equipment. Packages and conditions may change seasonally. When searching for holiday accommodation, you can weigh up these two points separately: the offerings at the Base in Upper Blessington and the downhill ski runs in the wider region.

Equipment and services at the Base

At Ben Lomond Base, skis, ski boots and poles, as well as snowboards and snowboard boots, are available for hire. Hire equipment must be collected at 3420 Blessington Road before you continue to the resort. As the collection procedure may change, check it before travelling; the range of hire equipment may also vary seasonally. The ticket office at the Base sells national park passes and provides visitor information about the mountain and surrounding areas.

Facilities at the Base include toilets, free Wi-Fi, a café and a gift shop. Ben Lomond Base Cafe serves barista-made TasCaffe coffee as well as hot and cold food. Après-ski options include a range of local lagers, Spreyton Ciders and Du Cane Beers. Facilities and food and drink offerings may change; confirm the café details with the operator before travelling.

Different seasonal focuses

During the summer months, the wider region around Ben Lomond offers experienced hikers and rock climbers numerous opportunities. This is a different experience from the downhill ski runs, which are suitable for all skill levels: in winter, skiing and snowboarding take centre stage, while the summer activities mentioned are specifically aimed at experienced hikers and climbers. This seasonal difference can help align expectations when planning with travellers who have different interests or experience levels. During the ski season, a shuttle bus also operates from the lower car park at Ben Lomond.

Getting there and planning your stay

From Hobart, the route to Ben Lomond National Park goes via Evandale, the partly sealed C413, Deddington Road and Blessington Road. It then continues towards Upper Blessington and onto Ben Lomond Road (C432).

The type of accommodation available in the wider region is also relevant when planning an overnight stay: use of the lodges in Ben Lomond Alpine Village is generally restricted to members and their guests.

A memorial in Upper Blessington

The North Esk Memorial Hall in Upper Blessington commemorates the First World War (1914–18) and the Second World War (1939–45). This historical connection adds another aspect of the area to the seasonal activities at Ben Lomond.
