The Cape Deslacs Circuit shows Clifton Beach from several perspectives: the loop trail runs along the beach for a stretch, passes through sand dunes and reaches a lookout on a headland. The beach itself is also part of the experience, along with Clifton Beach Reserve and Clifton Beach Park, each with its own facilities. You can plan your visit to Clifton Beach around a range of experiences, from spending time at the beach to taking a scenic walk.

Beach and facilities at Clifton Beach

Clifton Beach is accessible at the end of Clifton Beach Road. Rip currents occur at this beach; take this condition into account when planning your visit. Clifton Beach Reserve has barbecue facilities, a picnic area and playground equipment. Toilets are nearby. If you’re planning a picnic or barbecue, these facilities are a practical point of reference. Their availability may change.

Clifton Beach Park has a basketball tower, spring riders, swings and a rebound wall. This means the park has specific equipment in addition to the playground equipment at the reserve. Facilities may change; if a particular item of equipment is important to your plans, check the current situation before your visit. The two areas can therefore be distinguished by the facilities described for each.

The Cape Deslacs Circuit: loop trail, beach and lookout

The Cape Deslacs Circuit is a loop trail that takes about 45 minutes. It follows a closed gravel road to a memorial plaque, where two narrow tracks begin. The lookout is on a headland. From there, the view extends west along Clifton Beach, south to Bruny Island and over the dunes to Pipe Clay Lagoon. These named directions and destinations give the lookout a distinctive character.

The circuit runs along the beach for about 300 metres, then the track leads back to the car park through the sand dunes. The estimate of around 45 minutes provides a guide to the entire loop, while the approximate distance describes the beach section. This helps you fit the circuit into your day as an activity in its own right, without confusing the distance with the walking time for that section alone.

Bicycles may use the first section of the Cape Deslacs Circuit along the closed road. This permission applies to the first section, not automatically to the entire loop. Dogs are prohibited in Cape Deslacs Nature Reserve, which is an important habitat for short-tailed shearwaters. Follow the signs for current conditions.

Planning a visit to Clifton Beach

When searching for a holiday rental, the different experiences can help guide your choice: the circuit combines an approximate duration with a beach section, dunes and a lookout. Picnic and barbecue facilities are a key feature of Clifton Beach Reserve, while Clifton Beach Park is characterised by its specifically named equipment. Consider which of these aspects you want to shape your trip; this will help you choose a destination based on the activities you plan to enjoy.
