Strathalbyn
Accommodation in Strathalbyn
Discover Strathalbyn on several self-guided routes and through its historic collections: one route follows the Angas River, while the museum, Heritage Walk and other cultural sites offer different perspectives. There are also annual events. You can plan your stay around whether you enjoy spending time outdoors, are interested in history and art, or would like to attend an event.
Explore Strathalbyn at your own pace
The Angas River Walk is a self-guided route through Strathalbyn along the Angas River. It begins at the Children’s Bridge in the Soldiers Memorial Gardens in the centre. The starting point gives you a clear landmark for your walk; along the way, the route connects the river with the town. If you enjoy exploring without a guided programme, you can make this walk one of the highlights of your stay.
The Strathalbyn History Walk offers a different historical perspective and is also a self-guided walk. A map and brochure explain the influence and legacy of Strathalbyn’s Scottish founders. This route therefore focuses on the town’s history. A brochure for the Heritage Walk is also available from the Strathalbyn Visitor Information Centre, located in the former railway station on South Terrace.
Museum, local history and technology
The Strathalbyn & District Museum and Heritage Centre is housed in Strathalbyn’s original police station, built in 1858. The museum includes the Old Court House, the police station building, prison cells and outbuildings. Exhibitions in the courtroom explore the lives of the Ngarrindjeri and Peramangk as Traditional Owners, as well as the lives of the mainly Scottish settlers who came to the district from 1839 onwards.
The museum’s backyard also holds some distinctive collection pieces, including a blacksmith’s workshop, horse-drawn vehicles and an exhibit about the solar-assisted bicycle design Solar Flare. The range of topics spans local history and crafts as well as an unusual bicycle design. If you enjoy looking at actual objects rather than relying solely on written accounts, you’ll find a different way to connect with the town’s history here.
Gilbert’s Motor Museum showcases the history of motoring, as well as veteran, vintage and classic cars, motorcycles and motor racing vehicles. The museum is housed in a historic building that the Gilbert family owned and used from the early 1900s. They continued to use it until the business closed in December 2018. The history of vehicles is thus linked to the building and its former use.
Art, buildings and special events
The Stationmaster’s Gallery is a community gallery in a historic railway building. It displays artworks and crafts and holds up to six exhibitions each year featuring work by its members and invited artists. St Andrews Church is one of more than 30 heritage-listed buildings in Strathalbyn and overlooks the Soldiers Memorial Gardens. Together with the walking trails, these sites cater to a range of interests: art and crafts, historic buildings, or the history of vehicles and local residents.
Two annual events are worth considering if you’re planning a visit around an event. The two-day Collectors, Hobbies and Antique Fair takes place on the third weekend in August. The Strathalbyn Agricultural Society Show is held each year on the Monday of the long October weekend in South Australia. If you’d like one of these events to be a highlight of your stay, plan your travel dates around it; for a more independent visit, the walking trails and cultural sites can be your main focus.
When choosing a holiday rental in Strathalbyn, you can first consider whether you’d rather devote your trip to the self-guided trails and local history or to one of the annual events. The town offers a range of points of interest for families with different interests, from a riverside walk and historic exhibitions to vehicles, art and crafts.
