In Nangwarry, you can plan different experiences around forestry history at the museum and forest trails. The Nangwarry Forestry & Logging Museum brings timber processing to life, from the tree trunk to the sawmill. The Nangwarry Forest Information Walk also winds through groups of trees and explains the development of forestry in the southeast of South Australia. Together, these themes provide a practical framework for planning your day.

Forestry history at the museum

The Nangwarry Forestry & Logging Museum showcases historic machinery used to process timber, from the tree trunk to the sawmill. The exhibits range from heavy equipment to tools and transport, as well as objects from days gone by. This makes timber work tangible not only through individual machines, but also through the different tools and transport routes involved.

A notable exhibit is a life-size motorcycle from 1930, made entirely of wood. The collection also includes the first timber harvester in the southeast of South Australia. More than 4,500 photographs and hundreds of historic documents complement the exhibits. Photo albums and records about former mills and their employees offer insights into life and work at the time. Mementos and photographs from the community date back to Nangwarry’s founding.

The museum’s offerings also include DVDs covering timber harvesting in the Snowy Mountains and the southeast of South Australia, as well as the management of plantation forests in the southeast. Visitors can watch or purchase them. This extends the focus beyond individual exhibits to different regions and topics in forestry.

Forest trails and forestry outdoors

The Nangwarry Forest Information Walk includes the 1,000-metre-long Arboretum Trail. It passes through small groups of mature forest trees; information signs along the way describe the development of forestry in the southeast of South Australia. The trail’s length gives you a practical guide for planning your day, while the signs connect the walk with a historical theme.

Nangwarry also has several forest trails through woodland and pine plantations. This means you can choose between a trail with a designated arboretum theme and other forest trails. If you plan to take one of these trails, check access and trail conditions locally before setting out.
