Gold Coast: Coast, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Gold Coast
The Gold Coast combines coastal experiences with contemporary art, Aboriginal culture and green landscapes. Many of the destinations featured here are in the wider region; each represents a different focus for a trip. When looking for a holiday rental, consider which places and experiences you want to shape your stay, and choose your base accordingly.
Art and culture in the wider Gold Coast region
HOTA Gallery is a contemporary art hub on the Gold Coast. It includes five exhibition spaces, collection storage, a studio, as well as dining and retail. HOTA stretches across 17 acres of tropical parkland beside Evandale Lake, with the Surfers Paradise skyline as a backdrop. This connects visits to art venues with a landscape of parkland and lake. Gallery exhibitions and programmes may change.
HOTA Theatre 1 also plays a major part in the cultural offering: it presents comedy, theatre, dance, live music and large-scale musical productions, and has been operating since 1986. For a culture-focused trip, the gallery and theatre offer different experiences, from exhibitions to stage performances.
The Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre offers another perspective. It is the Gold Coast’s only dedicated Aboriginal cultural centre and is run by the local Aboriginal community through the Kalwun Development Corporation. Visitors can join guided cultural walks and tours, see traditional art and hear Dreamtime stories about Burleigh Headland. The centre also includes an Aboriginal art room and a gallery. Bookings and availability may change; check which tours are on offer before making plans.
Coastal trails, surfing and seasonal whale watching
Burleigh Heads offers a variety of coastal experiences. Burleigh Heads Beach is known for one of the most consistent and best-known point breaks on the east coast; the waves break long, clean and to the right. In Burleigh Head National Park, trails along the rocky coast meet routes through rainforest. The park also includes the Rainforest Circuit, and its plant life is diverse.
The approximately 30-minute Oceanview Walk leads from the rocky headland at Tallebudgera Creek through pandanus groves, grassland, coastal heath and mangroves to southern Burleigh. The time given is an approximate duration. As access to trails may change due to park alerts, check the latest alerts before setting out. The Gold Coast Oceanway also runs along the coast.
There are seasonal opportunities for whale watching from land and on the water. Humpback whales can be spotted from Tumgun Lookout in Burleigh Head National Park in winter and spring; sightings are not guaranteed. Whale-watching tours on the Gold Coast run seasonally from late May to October, departing from places including Surfers Paradise, Main Beach and Runaway Bay. Seasons and departure points may change, so it is worth checking before making plans. The two timeframes offer different indications of when whale watching might fit into your trip.
Hinterland, markets and events
For rainforest and waterfalls as well as the coast, the Gold Coast Hinterland has rainforest-rich national parks and walking trails lined with waterfalls in Springbrook, Lamington and Main Range. At Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, visitors can experience Australian wildlife up close; visitor programmes may change. These nature experiences complement the coastal trails with a different landscape focus.
Culture and events also extend beyond individual stages: the Gold Coast hosts music festivals, endurance competitions and high-profile sporting events. During the Swell Sculpture Festival, Gold Coast beaches become open-air galleries; the programme and dates may change. The Coastal Markets in Burleigh Heads are held on the beach at Justins Park. Stalls include handmade art, fashion, gifts and homewares, as well as pieces by local artisans featuring coastal motifs.
When choosing a holiday rental, the mix of activities you want each day may be the deciding factor: you might want to combine art and theatre with a guided cultural walk, or focus on coastal trails, surfing and seasonal wildlife watching. If you also plan to visit the hinterland, the accommodation’s location in relation to your chosen destinations will matter.
