Babinda
Accommodation in Babinda
Babinda combines a distinctive creek landscape in the tropical rainforest with insights into the town’s history. The Babinda Boulders offer opportunities for swimming and picnicking at the foot of the Bellenden Ker Range; the museum, walking tour and historic buildings provide other points of interest. If you’re planning a trip that takes an equal interest in nature and local history, Babinda offers a range of themes to choose between.
Rainforest and water at Babinda Creek
The Boulders at Babinda are a popular swimming and picnic spot in tropical rainforest at the foot of the Bellenden Ker Range. The name Babinda Boulders refers to a series of granite outcrops along Babinda Creek. This fast-flowing mountain creek forms cascades and swimming holes. Together, the creek, rock formations and rainforest are among the town’s defining natural features.
For families who like to plan their trip around a nature experience, this landscape is a compelling reason to consider Babinda. The swimming and picnic spot offers a different focus for an outing than the historic sites in the town centre. You can consider whether water and rainforest should take up most of your stay, or whether you’d also like to set aside time for the museum and local history. Choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Babinda can help you tailor your stay to the kind of trip you want, without limiting nature and culture to a single itinerary.
Discover local history your way
The Babinda Museum shares the history of Babinda and the surrounding area through contemporary interpretive displays. It is an award-winning modern community museum. If you’d rather explore the town centre on your own, you can take the Babinda Museum Walk: this self-guided historic walk passes through the centre and includes 18 historic plaques on display. The museum and walk offer two different ways to engage with the town’s history—through exhibits or by following a route with plaques.
The Babinda Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm; admission is by donation. You can take these hours into account if a museum visit is part of your travel plans. The Museum Walk has a different focus: its 18 historic plaques and self-guided route through the town centre take centre stage.
An air raid shelter and other historic sites
The former air raid shelter in Anzac Park on Munro Street is open to the public. The Babinda Air Raid Shelter is the best-preserved example of a public air raid shelter in North Queensland. Its significance as a surviving public shelter makes it a special part of the town’s history. Together with the museum and Museum Walk, it offers a range of ways to explore Babinda’s past, without limiting you to just one approach.
The Babinda Munro Theatre is also part of the town’s history: it is the only surviving theatre in Babinda. The Babinda Hotel offers another link to the past. It was Queensland’s only state-owned hotel and was built and operated in 1917 by the Ryan Labour Government. Both places add distinct aspects of Babinda’s history to the themes of the museum and air raid shelter.
