A Wider Perspective: The Northern Territory
The Northern Territory also offers different scales to consider when choosing a destination. It has more than 80 parks and reserves, covering a combined area of over 50,000 square kilometres. The landscapes range from the arid Red Centre to the tropical Top End. This regional perspective adds a broader range of nature and cultural experiences to your exploration of Alyangula.
Kakadu National Park combines cultural and natural World Heritage values with internationally significant wetlands. It has around 5,000 recorded Aboriginal rock art sites. Kakadu is jointly managed by its Traditional Owners and the Australian Government through the Kakadu Board of Management and the Director of National Parks. Nature, rock art and joint management give the park its own distinctive cultural and landscape profile in the Northern Territory.
Water shapes the ancient landscape of Litchfield National Park, where several waterfalls plunge into crystal-clear pools. At Tolmer Falls, there is a path along the edge of the waterfalls as well as an accessible path to the viewing platforms. The park is also significant to the Koongurrukun, Mak Mak Marranunggu, Werat and Warray Aboriginal communities. Litchfield therefore combines landscape experiences with a specific cultural connection.
Hiking Options in the Northern Territory
Nitmiluk National Park is on Jawoyn Country. The Nitmiluk Centre provides information about walks, canoe hire, boat tours and camping. One standalone hiking option is the Jatbula Trail: this 62-kilometre long-distance trail follows a one-way route, starting at Nitmiluk Gorge and ending at Leliyn, also known as Edith Falls. Along the way, it crosses a sandstone plateau and passes through woodland, open forest, monsoon forest and river landscapes.
To reach the start of the Jatbula Trail near 17 Mile Creek, hikers take a ferry from Nitmiluk Gorge. It is worth checking the current timetable for this leg. The trail length, one-way route and ferry crossing are practical points to consider when deciding whether this hike is right for you.
