Rydal tells its story especially through the railway: bridges, station buildings and a former signal box bring the town’s development to life. If you prefer the outdoors, you can explore historic Rydal on foot along the Heritage Walk or discover the Bicentennial National Trail, which passes through the town. This means different interests can shape your travel plans: railway history, a walk around town or a longer-distance trail.

Railway heritage and distinctive structures

The Rydal Rail Bridge and Viaduct Group includes the first brick arch bridges built on the New South Wales railway network. The bridges are of state historical and technical significance. The Rydal Railway Station group is also a significant early railway complex: it is considered a rare example of a station combined with a residence. Only five such structures remain.

Rydal Station opened in 1869 and was the western railway line’s terminus until 1872. The signal box dates from 1915 and remained in operation until the late 1980s. A restored railway luggage van stands in the former horse dock at the station, illustrating another part of the town’s history. Together, these individual structures and objects offer different points of interest for anyone interested in early railway infrastructure.

Another historic building is the Union Church. It was built in 1899 in the late 19th-century Carpenter’s Gothic style for Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist congregations. Anyone interested in church architecture or local building history can explore this alongside the railway story.

Explore on foot and learn about the trail

The Rydal Heritage Walk is a circuit where you can explore historic Rydal on foot. The Bicentennial National Trail also passes through the town, but it is on a very different scale: the route is 5,330 kilometres long and runs from Cooktown in Queensland to Healesville in Victoria. Part of the Rydal Showground is designated as a campground for this trail. If you’re interested in long-distance walking, you’ll find Rydal on the route of the trail; the Heritage Walk, by contrast, is a circuit around the town.

To get there from Lithgow, follow the Great Western Highway towards Bathurst. At the signposted turn-off at Mt. Lambie, Pikes Lane leads to Rydal; the town is about 4 kilometres from this turn-off. This information can help you include the drive to Rydal in your trip without confusing the approximate distance with a distance from Lithgow.

Local events and a place to take a break

The Rydal Show is held every year on the first Friday and Saturday in February at the historic Rydal Showground in Market Street. It showcases local produce and livestock, as well as arts, crafts and cooking. The Rydal Gymkhana takes place there on the last weekend in October. The program includes sporting and entertainment events such as the Stockmen’s Challenge, Farmer’s Challenge, and Ironman and Ironwoman competitions. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these annual events, the two occasions differ in both season and program.

The location of the ANZAC Day ceremonies also alternates: in even-numbered years, they take place at the First World War memorial near Rydal Station; in odd-numbered years, they are held at the Second World War memorial gates at the Rydal Showground. For a quieter break, visit Greg Featherstone Park on Bathurst Street. It has picnic facilities and was established on railway land in 2000 as a community project.

Accommodation is available for one or two couples or a small family in the stationmaster’s residence, built in 1869 at Rydal Station. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can also consider which of the town’s stories, trails and annual events described here matter most to your trip.
