Potts Point can be explored through very different discoveries: a green space with a playground and monument, memorials to two world wars, and a mansion from the early colonial period. If you like to alternate between parks, architecture and history when choosing a destination, you’ll find several specific themes here to help shape your plans.

Fitzroy Gardens: Green Space and Monument

Fitzroy Gardens is a green space in the heart of Kings Cross. It includes a paved plaza with the El Alamein Fountain and a fenced playground. This brings together a landscaped plaza, a striking monument and a play area within a park. For families, the fenced playground is a specific feature they can take into account when planning; at the same time, the history of the place remains clearly present.

The modernist design of the El Alamein Fountain evokes a giant water dandelion rising above four terraced pools. Its form offers a distinctive way to approach the monument: alongside its design, it commemorates the 9th Division of the Australian Imperial Forces in the Second World War. Architecture and remembrance are thus part of the same experience, without one replacing the other.

Memorials to Two World Wars

Another historical focus can be found in Embarkation Park. The troop embarkation memorial there was erected in 1921 and taken over by the city administration in 1934. Its inscription recalls the departure point of the soldiers who passed through the gates opposite on their way to the Great War of 1914 to 1918. It also commemorates the Centre for Soldiers’ Wives and Mothers NSW. The memorial therefore tells not only of soldiers and their departure for war, but also preserves the connection to the women and mothers named in the inscription.

Taken together, the two monuments emphasize different things: the El Alamein Fountain commemorates the 9th Division in the Second World War; the inscription in Embarkation Park records the departure for the First World War and the Centre for Soldiers’ Wives and Mothers NSW. Those interested in history can make these different layers of remembrance a focus of their exploration of Potts Point.

Tusculum and 19th-Century Architecture

Tusculum is a two-storey Regency mansion designed by John Verge and built between 1831 and 1835. Verge designed it for businessman A.B. Spark. The building belongs to an early phase of villa architecture on Woolloomooloo Hill: Tusculum was one of the first villas there. In the 1830s, the colonial government sought to create a prestigious neighbourhood for the social elite at this location.

The house’s use adds a personal and institutional history, too. Tusculum served as William Grant Broughton’s residence for almost his entire tenure. Broughton was the first Bishop of Australia from 1836 to 1847 and Bishop of Sydney from 1847 to 1852. The architecture, the person who commissioned it and the story of its resident offer different perspectives on the same house; together, they show how the significance of a historic building can be understood through its construction and use.

Rockwall, a contemporary neighbouring building also designed by John Verge, is part of the architectural context. Tusculum and Rockwall are among the few surviving colonial villas. The connection between the two houses adds a comparative perspective to the view of Tusculum: alongside the individual design is the question of which buildings from this period have survived.
