Lennox Head brings together a striking stretch of coastline, a dark freshwater lake, a path to Pat Morton Lookout, and art and cultural history. When planning your holiday, it’s worth considering these different experiences: would you like to spend time by the water, explore a coastal route, or also discover galleries and an important cultural heritage site?

Coast, Boat Channel and Lake Ainsworth

The Lennox Head National Surfing Reserve stretches 7.2 km from Lennox Head Surf Club south to Flat Rock. Its named endpoints and length provide clear orientation along this stretch of coast. If you’re planning a holiday focused mainly on the ocean, you can make the reserve one of the highlights of your trip.

Boat Channel is at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, opposite Rutherford Street. Its calm waters offer opportunities for swimming and snorkelling, as well as relaxing by the water. So alongside the expansive stretch of coast, there’s another kind of waterside experience to choose from: being active in calm water or taking a relaxing break on the shore.

Lake Ainsworth is also at the northern end of Lennox Head. The lake is a freshwater tea-tree lake; its dark tannins come from the surrounding paperbark trees. This natural colour gives the lake its distinctive character. If you’d like to include different waterside landscapes in your trip, you can plan a visit to Lake Ainsworth as a separate highlight, alongside the coastal reserve and Boat Channel.

If you enjoy walking, this route offers a distinct way to experience the coast: you can plan your walk from town and follow the route via Boat Channel and the waterfront promenade. When choosing your holiday rental, it may help to first consider whether an outing along this path or a stay by the lake or water will play a bigger part in your holiday. The well-known starting point in the town centre is a practical landmark for planning your day.

Art in town and cultural heritage

The Lennox Arts Collective is a gallery on the main street in the centre of Lennox Head. Eight artists exhibit their work there. The collective also runs art workshops on weekdays and weekends. Exhibitions featuring works by other artists change every two weeks, adding another changing feature to the collective’s offerings.

Another cultural highlight is the Lennox Head Aboriginal Area. It was protected to safeguard the cultural and historical values of the Ceremonial Ring. The Ceremonial Ring was a special place for the Bundjalung Aboriginal people, where initiation rites for boys were held. It consists of a raised ring on sandy ground and is considered one of the best-preserved coastal ceremonial sites in New South Wales. This history makes the site an important part of Lennox Head’s cultural heritage.
