Discover Junee: Railway History, Chocolate and Museums
Accommodation in Junee
Junee offers a range of ways to explore, from railway history and chocolate-making to wetlands and leisure activities. A particularly distinctive feature is the Junee Roundhouse, one of the few operating railway roundhouse buildings in the Southern Hemisphere. When planning a trip, families can choose from cultural experiences, nature and activities to suit different interests.
Railways and Local History
The Junee Roundhouse was the last steam locomotive depot built in New South Wales. The Junee Roundhouse Museum displays steam and diesel locomotives. The collection also includes passenger carriages, among them a sleeper car, a rail motor and a mail van. Alongside locomotives, visitors interested in railways can discover a range of carriages and other rail vehicles in Junee.
The Broadway Museum offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It features themed exhibitions of artefacts from the Junee region, as well as photographs and documentation on rural and railway history. The exhibits cover both the past and the present. The museum is accessed through the former bar, which now houses the “Betty’s On Broadway” café and antique shop.
Make Your Own Chocolate
At the Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory, visitors can get hands-on in practical chocolate-making workshops. For AUD 6 per serving, they make a large chocolate confection known as a “giant freckle”. Workshops run daily from 9 am to 3 pm; no booking is required. Those interested in how chocolate is made can also take a self-guided tour of the production areas daily from 9 am to 4 pm.
The workshop and tour offer two different ways to experience the factory: one involves creating your own chocolate confection, while the other focuses on exploring the production areas independently. This gives families a way to tailor their visit to whether they are more interested in making something together or seeing how production works.
Nature, Play and Leisure
The Junee Urban Wetland is home to a variety of plants and animals. It adds a natural perspective to Junee’s railway and museum attractions. Visitors interested in habitats can consider this alongside the cultural activities when choosing experiences for their stay.
The Junee Regional Adventure Park offers children from the local area and visitors to Junee an enjoyable and inclusive outdoor space. The park includes a sensory play area planted with native Australian plants and a swing specially designed for people with disabilities. These features give families an idea of the play and sensory activities available there.
For a different kind of leisure activity, the Junee Golf Club has an 18-hole, par-72 golf course. Car enthusiasts can also consider the Classic Car Garage in Junee as an attraction. Alongside museums and chocolate-making, visitors can choose golf and classic cars as distinct areas of interest.
Choose Junee as Your Destination
When choosing a holiday rental or holiday home in Junee, you could first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: railway history and regional exhibitions, a chocolate-making workshop, nature, play or a leisure activity such as golf. These different options can help you plan a trip around your family’s interests, without making every day the same.
