Long Beach combines a freshwater wetland of state significance with a beach on the Batemans Bay Snorkelling Trail and a destination for sweeping views. Maloneys Beach is the trail’s first stop and is suitable for snorkelling; Square Head Track 2 leads to Square Head. Reed Swamp Lagoon is also here, connected to the beach by an outlet and an easement. This gives you three distinct features to consider when planning: wetland scenery, a beach activity and a scenic lookout.

The lagoon and beach as a landscape

Reed Swamp Lagoon is classified as a freshwater wetland of state significance. An outlet and an easement connect the lagoon to the beach. This link brings together two distinct waterscapes: the freshwater wetland and the beach. The lagoon is therefore a natural feature in its own right, alongside the snorkelling and the track to the lookout. If you choose Long Beach for its scenery, you can include both the wetland and the beach in your travel plans.

Snorkelling and facilities at Maloneys Beach

Maloneys Beach in Long Beach is the first stop on the Batemans Bay Snorkelling Trail and is suitable for snorkelling. This makes snorkelling a specific reason to include the beach in your plans. Maloneys Beach also has a grassy area, toilets, a boat ramp, electric barbecues and a covered picnic area. So a beach day offers both a water-based activity and practical facilities for a break. If the facilities are important for your visit, check their current availability beforehand.

Views from Square Head

Square Head Track 2 leads to scenic Square Head. From there, views extend across Batemans Bay, Long Beach, Snapper Island and the two Tollgate Islands. Access to Square Head in Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve is via Blairs Road in Long Beach. The track offers a different focus from Maloneys Beach: rather than snorkelling, the emphasis here is on views across the places listed above. This lets you choose between a beach day and a scenic walk when planning your trip.

A planned section of track

On 10 September 2025, Eurobodalla Shire Council announced a project to connect two existing sections of track, creating a continuous 1.6-kilometre route from Long Beach Road to the Maloneys Beach foreshore. The announcement said the project was expected to be completed by the end of 2025 and was intended to make walking easier and safer for the Long Beach community. If this section affects your plans, check before visiting whether the continuous route has since been completed and is open to use.

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Long Beach, it helps to first decide what kind of stay you want. Maloneys Beach offers snorkelling and the facilities listed above, Square Head is the destination for a scenic walk, and Reed Swamp Lagoon is a wetland of state significance.
