Eltham: Art, History and Bushland
Accommodation in Eltham
Eltham brings art, local history and bushland together in a distinctive way. The Heidelberg Artist Trail and the Little Eltham Heritage Walk offer different ways to discover local history, while the Barak Bushlands and Edendale Community Environment Farm add their own landscape highlights. If you are looking for holiday accommodation, it helps to first consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on Eltham’s local attractions or on the broader destination of Nillumbik Shire.
Art that brings Eltham’s history to life
The Heidelberg Artist Trail runs along the Diamond Creek Trail between Wingrove Park and the Activity Centre on Main Road. Its signs feature reproductions of six paintings by Walter Withers and provide information about each work. Withers moved to Eltham in 1903 and painted works inspired by the surrounding area until his death in 1914. The trail thus combines a specific route with the art of a painter whose work was shaped by the area. In 2024, the signs were replaced with new materials and a more accessible design; this update relates to the design of the signage.
The artwork Spirit of Nillumbik at Eltham Town Square also celebrates the artistic spirit of Eltham and the surrounding communities. Another cultural destination is the Eltham Library Community Gallery. It opened in 1994 and is located in the Eltham Library complex on Wurundjeri-Woi-wurrung Country. Together, these examples show how different art forms and places in Eltham are connected to the town’s history and cultural life.
Local history and landscapes
The Little Eltham Heritage Walk offers a chance to explore local history. It passes several historically and culturally significant places and can start and finish at Eltham Library. This fixed starting and finishing point gives your exploration a clear framework without requiring you to plan for a specific walking time.
The Barak Bushlands, with open spaces and a bushland reserve, lie north of Main Road. A different kind of local open space is the back oval at Eltham Lower Park: also called Oval Number Two or South Oval, it is a fenced area where dogs can run off leash. The exact name is useful if you are planning to visit with a dog, as the rule applies to this area.
The Edendale Community Environment Farm covers seven hectares along Diamond Creek. Together with the bushland areas, it offers another perspective on the landscape in and around Eltham. At a regional level, Edendale provides education about sustainable living and the natural environment.
The broader destination of Nillumbik Shire
In the broader destination of Nillumbik Shire, towns lie among bushland and picturesque hills. An extensive network of trails offers opportunities for walking, horse riding and cycling. It includes the Panton Hill Bushland Reserve System, made up of seven community-managed bushland reserves in the Panton Hill, Smiths Gully and Watsons Creek area, covering about 140 hectares in total. The reserves offer opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching, horse riding and mountain biking. The Green Wedge Trail runs from Watery Gully Road in Wattle Glen to Clintons Road in Smiths Gully, providing another way to explore Nillumbik’s rural areas.
The region’s culture also has several facets. Montsalvat, at the foot of the Yarra Valley, is an arts centre and artists’ community founded in 1934. The site covers 12 acres and has more than 34 buildings, including three galleries, 19 studios, a ceramics centre and event spaces for concerts. Its offerings include exhibitions, studio programs and ceramics classes. The Hurstbridge Heritage Trail passes 30 historically significant sites whose history spans from early settlement to the mid-20th century.
Nillumbik’s public art collection includes sculptures, land art, murals and mosaics spread across the Shire’s towns and landscapes. The Nillumbik Artists Open Studios 2026 program offers a special insight into the work of local artists: it includes painters, ceramicists, printmakers, sculptors and musical instrument makers, and invites visitors to explore the studios of more than 30 artists across the Shire.
