Discover Campbelltown: Gardens, History and Culture
Accommodation in Campbelltown
Japanese garden design, heritage-listed architecture and a cultural centre with galleries and performance spaces give Campbelltown its varied character. Sport and events are also part of the town’s appeal. When planning a trip, you can first consider whether gardens and art, historic places or an event date will shape your stay.
Discover Architecture and History
Glenalvon House was built in 1840 by Michael Byrne and is a Colonial Georgian-style town house. Its clear architectural classification makes the building a specific point of interest for anyone interested in Campbelltown’s historic architecture. The Campbelltown Heritage Plaque Walking Tour offers a different perspective on the district’s history: ten bronze plaques honour pioneers who made significant contributions to the district. On this walk, the focus is not on individual buildings, but on people and their contributions.
The Town Hall Theatre also combines a distinctive building history with a long-standing cultural use: today’s theatre is housed in two heritage-listed buildings, and the Campbelltown Theatre Group has used it since 1980. Dredge’s Cottage, meanwhile, is part of the self-guided Campbelltown Heritage and Cultural Walk. These offerings have different focuses, from architecture and remembrance of local figures to a self-guided cultural walk.
The Campbelltown Guided Heritage Walk is led by an experienced local guide, and participants receive an explanatory brochure at the Campbelltown Visitor Information Centre. Self-guided tours are also available for the walk. Bookings for the guided tour are subject to availability. If you prefer a guided experience, you can check availability in advance; if you would rather choose your own focus, there is also a self-guided option.
Japanese Gardens and Culture in the Open Air
The Campbelltown Japanese Gardens are located on the grounds of the Campbelltown Arts Centre. Garden features include a traditional waterfall, a koi pond, a wooden bridge, stone-paved paths and lush plantings. The teahouse is especially distinctive: it was designed based on a 16th-century design and handcrafted by Japanese artisans. Water, garden paths and architecture offer several specific points of interest to focus on during a visit.
The Arts Centre complements the outdoor gardens with gallery spaces, workshops, a performance studio and a large outdoor amphitheatre. Visitors can view exhibitions, attend performances and take part in workshop programs; the program may change. If you want to make art and gardens the focus of your trip, you can use these two distinct areas as a guide for your plans. The Art Cafe at the Campbelltown Arts Centre serves morning tea, business lunches and weekend breakfasts.
Sport and Events
Campbelltown Sports Stadium regularly hosts soccer, rugby league and rugby union matches, from local to national level. The stadium also hosts events such as the Campbelltown Christmas Carol celebrations, outdoor cinema events and the popular Pacific International Test. Match schedules vary, and the events program may also change. So, if sport or a particular event is an important reason for your trip, it’s worth checking the relevant dates before planning.
The different themes offer a helpful way to choose what to do during your stay: an interest in architecture and local history leads to different discoveries than a desire to experience garden design, exhibitions or sporting events. Choosing accommodation therefore starts with the kind of stay you want—whether culture, history, gardens or a stadium event is your priority.
