Discover Hawker: Art, History and Views
Accommodation in Hawker
Hawker brings together a self-guided walk featuring works by a local artist, insights into early pioneering history and a culinary journey of flavours. You can also take in the landscape: Jarvis Hill offers panoramic views of the Central Flinders Ranges. When choosing your holiday rental, you can consider whether you’d like to focus your trip more on art, history, food or scenery.
Wide-open views
Jarvis Hill lies about 6 km west of Hawker. From there, panoramic views extend across the Central Flinders Ranges, including the Hawker area. Named sights include the Worumba Hills to the east, Wilpena Pound, the Elder Range and Wonoka Hill to the north, and the Yourambulla Range to the south. These directions and landscape names give the view a specific context: you can familiarise yourself with different parts of the surrounding area rather than seeing it simply as a general mountain panorama.
Art and town history on foot
The Adnyamathanha Dreaming Hawker Mural Walking Trail is a self-guided walk through Hawker. Works by local artist Juanella McKenzie are at the heart of the experience. This stop offers an artistic way to connect with the town during your stay; you can combine it with other interests on your trip, without it being a guided tour.
The Hawker Town Heritage Walk explores the town’s built heritage and early pioneering history. A guide for the walk is available at the information centre in Hawker Motors, on the corner of Wilpena Road and Cradock Road. The railway station is part of this historical picture: Bacon & Brewer completed it in 1885. In 1989, it was restored and converted into the Old Ghan Restaurant and Gallery. The railway station is also heritage-listed.
Museum, flavours and science
Fred Teague’s Museum at Hawker Motors contains relics from early settlers. Exhibits include gemstones, minerals, fossils, photographs, antique bottles and memorabilia. The collection spans everything from natural materials to objects and images from the past. Visitors interested in different kinds of discovery will find a different focus here than on the walks exploring art and town history.
Flinders Food Co in Hawker offers travellers and tour groups what it describes as an authentic culinary experience: a journey of flavours that pairs homemade food with native flavours and stories. You can include this as a distinct culinary focus in your trip planning. The Hawker Seismograph Station is concerned with seismology, the science of recording such movements. It offers an informative perspective that differs from the historical and culinary themes.
Getting oriented and travel ideas
The Hawker Visitor Information Centre provides maps of the surrounding area and the state of South Australia. If you’re planning trips beyond Hawker, these maps can help you find your way. These different perspectives can help you relate Hawker’s landscape to your travel interests.
For a trip with varied interests, you can consider art, pioneering history, the museum, food and landscape as separate focuses rather than combining them into a single itinerary. If you’d like to discover more destinations, you’ll also find Flinders Ranges and Quorn here.
