Discover Powell
Accommodation in Powell
Powell combines everyday history, remembrance, and a variety of activities. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Powell can tailor their stay to different interests: museums and historic sites, paved paths in the city parks, water recreation, golf, or insights into agriculture.
Experience Culture and History Consciously
The Homesteader Museum introduces visitors to Powell’s domestic culture at the beginning of the 20th century. The permanent exhibitions use photographs and artifacts to portray this way of life. An interactive exhibition area featuring a Burlington-Northern combination caboose adds another tangible element. For travelers who want not only to see landscapes but also to understand the development of a place, the museum offers an engaging focal point.
The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center offers a different historical perspective. Photographs, artifacts, oral histories, and interactive exhibits explore the lives of the Japanese and Japanese Americans who were interned there during World War II. They also address the wartime relocation, the history of anti-Asian prejudice in the United States, and the factors that led to the forced relocation and internment.
The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center is located off Highway 14A, about 10 minutes from Powell. The ¼-mile paved Setsuko Saito Higuchi Interpretive Trail passes through key moments in the history of Heart Mountain and points out surviving features of the former camp. At Heart Mountain National Historic Site, some landmarks of the former Heart Mountain Relocation Center remain; others existed while the center was in operation during the 1940s.
Parks, Water, and Activity
Powell has 10 city parks covering approximately 125 acres. Together, they offer 1.5 miles of paved paths for walking and cycling, as well as a fishing pond. This makes it possible to add shorter outdoor walks and peaceful hours by the water to your stay without devoting the entire day exclusively to museums or historical exhibits.
The Powell Aquatic Center is an indoor water recreation facility in Homesteader Park on Highway 14A. The leisure pool features a beach entry, a splash pool, a lazy river, a water walk, and a seating area for relaxing. There is also a 25-yard swimming pool with eight lanes and a diving board. Travelers with different interests will find a clearly defined option here for a more active or weather-independent day during their stay.
For golf enthusiasts, Powell Golf Club is located seven miles east of the city of Powell. The 18-hole golf course welcomes players of all skill levels. Another way to explore the area through a specific theme is offered by Powell’s Interpretive Agriculture Tours: They explain how agriculture works in the desert and introduce local producers.
Local Character and Trip Planning
The Park County Fair takes place annually during the last full week of July and highlights the agricultural heritage through livestock, youth entries, artists, and food. Those traveling during this period can plan their trip around this fixed event date. Outside the fair, agriculture remains present as well, for example through the Interpretive Agriculture Tours and encounters with local producers.
The “Landform Journey” sculpture at Northwest College also contributes to the area’s distinctive history. It is integrated into the Student Center’s two-story fireplace and was inspired by the topography of nearby Heart Mountain and the Bighorn Basin. In this way, a work of art complements the historical and landscape themes that shape Powell.
When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first consider which combination should define your stay: museums and remembrance, paths and parks, water recreation, golf, or agriculture. The specific offerings provide several independent starting points for planning each day. More destinations: Cody.
