Natrona: History, Landscapes and Special Travel Experiences
Accommodation in Natrona
Natrona County combines compelling history with expansive landscapes, reservoirs and geological features. Families and other travelers can plan very different kinds of days here: from historic trail stories and reconstructed buildings to museums, water activities, viewpoints and remote natural areas. When looking for a vacation rental or holiday home in Natrona, it helps to determine your preferred focus early on.
History Along Important Routes
Fort Caspar is a reconstructed military post from 1865 located at a significant river crossing along the Oregon, Mormon Pioneer, California and Pony Express Trails. The reconstructed buildings, the replica Mormon ferry and a section of the Guinard Bridge offer an engaging way to explore the connections between these historic routes. Interpretive exhibits in the museum provide additional context.
The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center is dedicated to the stories of Indigenous peoples, early explorers and the Oregon, Mormon, California and Pony Express Trails. Seven galleries offer simulated rides in covered wagons and stagecoaches, life-size displays and information panels. The site also includes 500 acres with more than four miles of interpretive trails, tracks worn by emigrant wagons and sweeping views. This provides several different ways to experience the region’s history during a culturally focused stay.
Reservoirs, Trails and Landscapes
Alcova Reservoir covers 2,470 acres of water, with six campgrounds and eight boat ramps. Boating, water skiing, picnicking, beach use, camping and fishing are among the activities available there. You can reach the reservoir from U.S. 220 via County Roads 406 or 407. Those who want to combine a stay focused on water activities with excursions can take this information into account when choosing accommodations and planning their days.
The HAWG Ice Fishing Derby takes place every year at Pathfinder Reservoir. The 1.7-mile Pathfinder Interpretive Trail is accessible from the dam, while Pathfinder Dam is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Seminoe-Alcova Back Country Byway begins at Alcova, where Wyoming Highway 220 meets Natrona County Road 407, and runs 64 miles through prairie grazed by pronghorn, desert landscapes and the Seminoe Mountains. The route also passes Miracle Mile on the North Platte River, an area regarded as a blue-ribbon fishery.
Discover Geology and Wildlife
Hell’s Half Acre features deep ravines, caves, rock formations and densely compacted erosional soil across more than 960 acres. In Casper’s Rotary Park, the Geology Interpretive Trail interprets Precambrian rocks that formed more than 2.5 billion years ago. The trail offers viewpoints overlooking Garden Creek Falls and leads from the Rotary Bridge up a short, steep incline to the highest observation platform at the waterfall.
The Tate Geological Museum houses more than 6,000 fossil and mineral specimens. The Werner Wildlife Museum displays 450 birds, fish and other animals and focuses primarily on Wyoming’s native wildlife. The Wildlife Study Series takes place on the third Thursday of each month from the third Thursday in February through the third Thursday in October. Depending on your interests, you can therefore choose between natural history, wildlife and regional culture.
The Right Base for Planning Your Trip
Natrona County offers year-round opportunities for camping, cycling, hiking, fishing, boating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and snow biking. When choosing a vacation rental or holiday home, consider whether museums and historic sites, water activities, wildlife observation or a varied excursion route should be the main focus. The Savage Peak Wilderness Study Area encompasses 7,041 acres of BLM-managed land with rugged, mountainous terrain, firs, pines, aspens and cottonwoods in the drainage channels. Access requires permission from a landowner. The Ponderosa Park area at the eastern end of Casper Mountain covers 2,460 acres of undeveloped landscape and adds a remote setting to the selection.
