Saratoga combines unique water-based experiences with nature, regional history and surprising insights into the wildlife. Saratoga Lake is one and a half miles north of town along WYO 130/230 and provides a clear focus for days spent by the water. In addition, there are the hot springs behind Hobo Hot Springs, the Saratoga Museum and the Saratoga National Fish Hatchery. When choosing your vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worth considering first whether you would prefer to plan your trip around lake activities, culture, fishing or varied nature experiences.

Saratoga Lake and Hobo Hot Springs

Saratoga Lake covers 1,200 acres and offers year-round opportunities for fishing for brook trout, rainbow trout and lake trout. Sandy Beach is located on the eastern shore. There, you can picnic, fish, go boating and windsurf. Every January, Sandy Beach also hosts the Annual Ice Fishing Derby. Anyone visiting Saratoga at this time of year will experience a special combination of the lake, fishing and local tradition.

Another side of the town can be seen at Hobo Hot Springs. Behind the springs, hot springs along the bank of the North Platte River form hot pools. Hobo Hot Springs also has a free public hot-water pool. The Lobster Pot at one end of the Hobo Pool reaches 120 degrees. These different water experiences give your trip its own rhythm: a day at Saratoga Lake can be followed by a visit to the warm pools, allowing you to enjoy a range of interests rather than limiting yourself to a single activity.

Museum, Train Station and History

The Saratoga Museum is housed in the original Union Pacific Railroad train station in Saratoga, built around 1915. It contains more than 10,000 artifacts and changing exhibitions. The geological collection is particularly distinctive: it includes minerals and gemstones from regions ranging from India to Antarctica. The museum therefore offers both a historical connection to the town and a collection that takes you far beyond Saratoga.

For planning your day, it is important to note that the museum is open year-round, but its opening hours change seasonally. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, it is open Monday through Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m. and closed on Sundays. Outside this season, it is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m.; it is then closed on Sundays and Mondays. Another historic building is the Wolf Hotel, a brick building constructed in 1893 by German immigrant Frederick Wolf.

Fish Hatchery, Rivers and Trails in the Surrounding Area

The Saratoga National Fish Hatchery welcomes visitors at the visitor center and on the grounds. It offers educational programs as well as tours of the fish hatchery. The facility raises the endangered Wyoming toad and several species of trout. For travelers who want to combine wildlife observation with accessible information, this visit provides a different experience from a day at the lake or museum.

The surrounding area also offers a variety of possibilities. The rivers with naturally gravelly beds in the Platte Valley provide opportunities for outstanding trout fishing. Hundreds of miles of hiking trails extend through the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest area around Saratoga. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between water-based activities, short explorations and longer days in nature. This variety is helpful for families with different interests, as not everyone has to follow the same daily schedule.

Getting There and Planning the Right Trip

Shively Field Airport has an 8,400-foot-long paved and lighted runway. A vacation rental in Saratoga is therefore particularly well suited to your plans if you want to structure your days flexibly around these different themes.

If Saratoga is part of a larger trip, you can also look at Rawlins and Elk Mountain for further planning.
