In Mequon, nature experiences, trails for a range of activities, and historic sites come together. Virmond Park is located on the bluffs above Lake Michigan, and the paved Ozaukee Interurban Trail runs through the city. There are also parks with walking trails and distinctive features, as well as the Jonathan Clark House and a historic church in Freistadt. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether outdoor activities, nature, or history should be the focus.

Nature on Lake Michigan

Virmond Park covers 62.5 acres and is located on the bluffs above Lake Michigan. It combines a specific size with a distinctive location. The park also includes one of the three Important Bird Areas in Ozaukee County and lies along the Lake Michigan Flyway. For nature enthusiasts, this designation is a particular reason to take a closer look at the park; it sets it apart from the other places described, whose features are primarily trails, bridges, or facilities by the water.

The Interurban Trail for a range of activities

The 30-mile paved Ozaukee Interurban Trail runs through Mequon. The paved Interurban Trail is designed for cyclists, walkers, joggers, and cross-country skiers, and serves as a safe transportation connection through Ozaukee County. Its length and paved surface are useful features to consider when deciding what role a longer route should play in your vacation.

Walking trails, bridges, and water access

Several places offer walking trails, each with its own additional features. In addition to walking trails, Garrison’s Glen has a canoe launch. If you would like to consider a place where you can launch a canoe as well as take a walk, you’ll find that option there. Pukaite Woods at Rotary Park also has walking trails, as well as bridges and an observation pier. This combination makes it a different choice from Garrison’s Glen, whose stated features are trails and a canoe launch.

Trinity Creek Wetland Habitat also has walking trails. There, information signs and bridges complement the trails. This allows you to distinguish between a walk with additional information and bridges and the other park features mentioned, without combining the different places into a single route. Villa Grove Park, in turn, has a boat landing, a pier, and fishing opportunities. These features appeal to travelers who are especially interested in fishing or facilities for boats and spending time by the water.

Architecture and history

The Jonathan Clark House was built in 1848 in the Greek Revival style and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers open-house dates and private tours. You can learn more about the Jonathan Clark House during open-house dates or on a private tour.

Another historic highlight is in Freistadt: the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church there is the oldest Lutheran church in Wisconsin. Together with the Jonathan Clark House, it broadens the picture of Mequon to include different points of historical interest. If history is an important part of your trip, you can include these places in your plans and combine them with nature and trail experiences.

More places to consider when planning your trip

If you’d like to include other places in your travel plans in addition to Mequon, you’ll find Saukville, Cedarburg, Grafton, Port Washington and Belgium here.
