Water at Brooks and Ross Dam

One of Schofield’s landmarks is Brooks and Ross Dam. Nearby, two boat landings provide access by canoe or kayak; fishing for walleye, musky, and panfish is also available near the dam. Paddling and fishing are therefore options with different focuses: one centers on a canoe or kayak trip, while the other focuses on the fish species listed. Regulations and conditions may vary; check the current rules before fishing.

Launch Sites and Kayak Launch

In its spring/summer 2025 issue, the City of Schofield listed designated watercraft launch sites on Drott Street both above and below the dam, as well as at the north end of Grossman Drive. It also listed another site behind Intercity Bank on Grand Avenue. Drott Street Landing has a universally accessible kayak launch; the portage at Schofield Dam also has one. The 2025 list and the launches provide specific reference points for different access locations. Check local conditions before your visit.

Nature and Winter Recreation

A butterfly garden in Mayor's Park adds to the nature theme and offers a different focus from the water-related activities. A city notice from 2022 described a sledding area for children in Grace Park in Schofield, where trees and brush had been cleared. The notice characterized it as safe and fun. This winter recreation option was located in the 2022 notice.

Local History and Waterways

The name also tells a story: Schofield was originally spelled “Scholfield,” after Dr. William Scholfield, who opened a sawmill in the area in the 1840s. This connects the area’s early industrial history with the original spelling of the place name. Lake Wausau is formed by the Wisconsin River. This adds a geographic perspective to the local history: while the lake’s formation puts the river landscape at the center, the boat landings and fishing opportunities near the dam focus on recreation on the water.
