Logan combines expansive nature, the history of West Virginia, and impressive opportunities for active days. Chief Logan State Park covers 4,000 acres and offers 18 miles of accessible hiking trails. This allows you to plan your trip in many different ways: one day can take you on foot through the state park, another to a museum, or onto a winding mountain road in Logan County.

Experience Nature and Choose Your Trails

Among the special experiences at Chief Logan State Park are guided elk tours. They provide insight into elk management and West Virginia’s growing elk herd. The tours begin at Chief Logan Lodge and include routes of 2 to 3 miles. Those looking for a guided nature experience can include this fixed starting point in their day’s itinerary. Chief Logan Lake is regularly stocked with trout and catfish, adding another notable location in the state park to the natural attractions.

Logan also offers several starting points for motorized outdoor experiences. The Braveheart Trail System in Logan County is designed for ATV, UTV, and dirt-bike riders and offers a scenic riding experience. The Braveheart Trail System and the Rockhouse Trail System use the same parking area and trailhead facility.

The Bearwallow Trail System is located near Logan and offers scenic landscapes, challenging trails, and access for ORVs, ATVs, UTVs, and off-road motorcycles. The Bearwallow trailhead has a parking area of more than 2 acres, a staffed trailhead, restrooms on-site, as well as permits and merchandise.

Museums, Memorial Sites, and Regional Stories

The Museum in the Park is a regional cultural center for the history and arts of West Virginia. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Buffalo Creek disaster and features archived news footage, interviews, and photographs. The museum also presents changing exhibitions, as well as artworks and historical objects from the collections of the West Virginia State Museum and the State Archives.

Another cultural highlight is the Hatfield McCoy Museum at the last residence and refuge of feud patriarch “Devil Anse” Hatfield. There, you can see original relics from the feud and Appalachian culture. The property includes a family moonshine well associated with the production of corn liquor. A bridge at the last residence and refuge of “Devil Anse” Hatfield was built by Hatfield himself. During your visit, the “Eat’n with The Hatfield’s” food truck serves meals.

Every summer, Logan hosts performances of the historical drama “The Aracoma Story.” It focuses on Shawnee people who lived at the site of present-day Logan. Alongside nature and trail experiences, this provides a cultural connection to the history of the region.

Logan as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

The country roads in Logan County offer more than 1,000 miles of winding mountain roads with scenic overlooks and historically significant places for motorcycle tours. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Logan can therefore clearly define the focus of their trip: extensive hiking trails, guided elk tours, museums, motorsports on trails, or a tour along mountain roads.
