Hiking Trails and Winding Routes
The Appalachian Trail crosses Route 615 at Little Wolf Creek. In the Little Wolf Creek Primitive Management Area, the landscape is characterized by a damp, moss-covered forest, tall eastern hemlocks and dense rhododendron undergrowth. The habitats there include areas for wild turkeys, white-tailed deer and woodland birds, among others.
The Wolf Creek Picnic Area and Trail has three trails, each approximately two miles long. One section of the trail system follows an old route; impressions of the original railroad ties are still visible there. This combines movement through the landscape with a specific detail from its transportation history.
Back of the Dragon represents a completely different travel experience: The route runs for 32 miles along Virginia Route 16 between Tazewell and Marion, through Tazewell County and over more than 400 curves. A downloadable GPX file is available for the drive and can be used with a compatible navigation app or GPS device. Drivers often meet at the Back of the Dragon Welcome Center in Tazewell before continuing toward Marion or onto other nearby Appalachian routes. Just before the school in Burke’s Garden, the Country Store marks the official beginning of the Heart of Appalachia Bike Trail.
History, Exhibitions and Music
Tazewell’s Main Street is a well-preserved historic town center with shops and restaurants. In Pioneer Park, fourteen wooden and stone buildings reflect life on the frontier in the 19th century. The Lucie Greever Gallery features twelve permanent exhibits and a changing exhibition space focusing on the history of Southwest Virginia and Appalachia.
A musical highlight is the Tazewell County Old Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers’ Convention. It takes place every July in Pioneer Park at the Historic Crab Orchard Museum. The program includes competitions for fiddle and guitar players, including a category for younger fiddle enthusiasts.
